Sins of the Fathers

My Dad was not a wealthy man but he gave each of his children as well as my wife all the love we needed and I praise God for that. Many fathers do not realize that they hold the capacity to build their children up or tear them down. The mistakes of the parents are often the cause of the problems of many young men and women who grow up feeling that they are not worth being loved. Let’s try to show them that God loves them. We love them, too!

Poem Artwork

He never had a father who cared for him as a father should.

He wasn’t kind, forgiving or ever showed that he understood.

Therefore he did not have a male figure to look up too.

Instead his father was a man to fear; he never felt he pleased him no matter what he might do.

When he grew up and found that he was soon to be a father to a new baby boy

He felt that the child was a problem, someone who would only annoy.

He did not learn from his father so he did impart love to his son.

What started with the forefathers would be devastating by the time it was done.

His son felt unloved, unworthy of being loved and of no use.

He realized not that he was a product of a father’s abuse.

He, like his father before him was a victim of the forefathers oversight.

That is why he got a gun and tried to rob a store one night.

It would not end happy and it ended in his death at an early age.

The sins of the fathers were passed to the son and his life was the wage.

Mourned only by his mother, he lay dead in the grave.

It would have taken only the love of his father for his life to be saved.

I wish EVERY MAN would read this and tell them God does love them and will show them how to love if they will only ask Him! And girls are not excluded from this story, as I know soooooooooooooo well! But that is another agony I never want to tell! Thank you Lew, I hope your book is read by all men! Send a copy to Focus on the Family!

You have done a wonderful job of telling a tragic and all-too-common story. My brother has long been among the missing for the very reason you describe. His case was doubly tragic because he did not have the support of a stable, understanding mother.

So sad, isn't it. Good news is that being abused does not doom you to be an abuser. Many of us came out of the experience determined NEVer to harm our children. Or anyone else!!

Thank you for this sensitive, intelligent, and deeply sincere poem.

May your life be filled with poetry, and your nights ah-some.

Always, 'Pea' <3

Oh my what a touching write while also a disturbing write...it's sad to think that many parents are guilty of this type of abuse. I see it everyday through the lives of children, the children whom many write off as being trouble makers...most of them are the children who are crying for help and craving attention from someone! My principal made a comment to me the other day...I was teasing and said, "I don't know what I will do without my two boys." speaking of two little boys that I retained last year, and both are a bit rowdy, to put it in a polite manner. Anyway, my principal replied, "Well, I must say Mrs. Bowling you've done for those two boys what many others wouldn't have done. You've given them a chance, you've also been their friend, teacher, and you've been a mother to them." This comment brought tears to my eyes...and also helps me through the rough days when they act out and are displaying anger and signs of lonliness and a hunger for someone to care. Lew you've touched me deeply with this write...in more ways than one. My mother chose to leave my father when I was one year old, no doubt the best for all of us. But my mother made up the difference, we never thought about not having our father around, because my mom was like the father in this write...and still does, when I am down or discouraged, and even sick...I think of my mom! Great write, enjoyed this much this morning.
Blessings,
Joyce Bowling

A tragic write but children learn from their parents...it is the same as a father or a mother who shows their children no love, they were raised the same way, and then their child is left without the ability to show love or any type affection. It's sad but things are passed down through generations & we can try to teach people but they don't have the ability to listen.
