That first spring we picked arms full of lilacs
from bushes that before you were barren
we picnicked in the vineyard of our reclaimed youth
sipping from love’s cup and feeding each other
nourishment for the heart and mind
we danced on hilltops green with new life
whispered forever in each other’s ear
when summer arrived we basked in the warmth
found in each other’s smile and knew
none had ever felt as we
when we strolled virgin beaches
absorbed in knowing none had been so far
and swam in crystal clear waters perhaps too deeply
autumn came and we gathered radiant leaves
tossed them into the air in celebration
a testimony to the colors of our joined soul
all beauty dimmed compared to the knowledge of us
come winter we listened to the quiet of snow gently falling
and built fires of our intense passion
each one warmer than the one before
while outside the world hushed in preparation
alas, when our second spring came
the lilacs did not bloom and the hills crumbled
when faced with reality
they were after all merely illusions
now our souls again wander lonely and alone
in the vast wasteland of love lost
yet I know that one day soon I will awake
to a bright new day and even the pain of now
will succumb to the beauty of memories of you.
you romanced me with the gentle flow of your words Marcia -- a very lovely poem of passion's flame doused by Spring's sophomore year of love -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael
lilacs...they hold so many memories for me...playing and dancing around our lilac bush in the springtime as purple blossoms showered us...and playing around its vibrant dark green roundness in the dusk during the warm summer evenings. Then there were the white lilacs that graced the west border of my aunt's and uncle's home...the home that once was my grandma's...We used to hide under that border and play in the cool privacy of the shade there. And then...there were the lilacs, brought to my son's grave by the nurses that attended him during his short little life...That is the last real memory I have of lilacs since my husband is so allergic to their fragrance...but your poem and your photo brought those vivid memories alive again.
In Scandinavia your Lilacs are named as Sirines, that you so elegant make a mention of, whispering in each other's ears became the tossing of Autumn's leaves and the arrival of yet another Spring, and I can imagine the heroine of the tale holding a ridiculous small parasol tiptoeing through the beauty remembrances of him.
We told here a intimate story and that so wanted kiss...
Gorgeous picture and lovely poem...stages of romance and relationships so vividly lived in these lines, sad that it must end. Striking poetry, Marcia...thanks. Be well, Kathy
