The haunting sound of  loons
Awoke me from my daydream
Always in pairs they mate forever

Breezes off the lake stronger
Sun behind dark clouds
All elements matching my mood

Recalling how he had left me
I see him through a mirage of moments
As he walks away never turning back
Leaving me to grasp only my sorrow

All the  years gone with the wind
With no one but me left to mourn them
I knew he wouldn't, that's not his style

He lives above life, setting his own standards
Diciplined enough to never look back
To never hold himself responsible for living

His attitude, there is a reason for everything we do
Once it is done, if it doesn't suit you, get on with it
Don't try to understand it, just go forward

Sounds like a great way to live life, except I wonder
What happens to fealty, honor,compassion,love
Are they just empty words used only for show

Would we be better off if everyone thought this way?
We could do away with words like commitment
Would we value anything besides liberty?

Standards like that are only good for single people
So I guess marriage would be out of the picture
On second thought, I'd rather be a faithful loon!

Not what I thought. I, too, have heard the loons' mournful call, and wondered where they went, disappearing under the water, never to return to the surface. Miss them.

You have such a gift for descibing nature. I love the outdoors and the creatures that fill the world around us. They give so much pleasure to all those who acknowledge them. And the natural world is a direct semblance of the spiritual in SO many ways. Your verse of the "love" Loon is one of the best reflections of that principle I have read in a long while.

Some wade in the shallow end, never diving into deep water to fully love another. I think the capacity to love depends on the quality of love received as a child. How can you love if it was never taught and this involves the issue of trust. Some may have been loved in excess, smothered and in turn avoid a final committment. Others are criticized continually so they don't have self-love and faith that they are truly lovable or that love can last. Some are just socio-paths dereft of true emotion! Enough of my head, this speaks to my heart personally. Reminds me of my ex-hubby. Are we better off taking and then taking off? The heartbreaker is to be pitied. The heartbroken probably is better off. So many times people misrepresent themselves at the onset where there should have been honesty. And then(I've done this myself)we can sometimes delude ourselves into thinking there's more invested from the other party than there really is. And then again, certain relationships come into our lives to teach us and then fade away. And then again, it just might come down to circumstance or economics. Confused, lol? I am. Look at me talking of love. I'm still single, tho I'd like to be a loon. Truly one of your best writes, Eileen!

Very absorbing and deeply touching poem. Makes you relaxed as you comfortably and rather pensively release a sigh of relief. GBQ

Eileen...I have to tell you how very much this hit home with me...the loons I watched carefully from the kayak I shared with the same personality you write about...So I share with you the sadness of one who can turn his back on a love he held dear, walk away silently,compassionless...I side with the sense of the loon!
Thank you for such a compelling write.

This is a poem for my treasure chest. I's\d be a Loon right along with you and we would watch life upon the banks and be happy that we didn't live the way those people do. I hate to say this since this is a serious pen but Eileen...if we were the two on the lake the people would be calling us "Loony birds". Niw I ask you...who are the Loony birds?

No. We are rapidly going into that mindset in this country, and es\lsewhere, but no, Eileen, and you know it would not. America is going to pay for the way we have slid into our lackadaisically attitude about marriage and/or relationships. Good poem, loon or not.
