Our Love Will Never Fade...

Unfaded Love
By La Belle Rouge

It’s one of those charmin red sunsets
Twilight will follow closely behind
My hands are work worn, my back aches
The lavender frock still hangs in loneliness
waiting for your imminent return
Yes it will be soon My Darling One,
for though news travels slowly in the South
we have recently heard rumors of defeat
and Bobby Lee’s surrender in Virginia
You will be home soon, if you yet live
you will come home to me and our son.
These dark times will forever be behind us
becomin only lingerin blots on our memories
Still wearin my straw bonnet I’ve gone inside
to help Cook with dinner, I’ve become a decent cook!

Brushin past Rose Mae as she sweeps the veranda
her big hand reaches out and touches my shoulder
“Now don’t you be a grievin yoself into a sickbed
The Colonel’s gonna be here soon as he can chile”
My darlin Mammy Rose who has been more mother
to me than my own ever was, so protective of me
and the little man lyin in his cradle in the parlor
Every moment but especially at twilight I think of you
your dark eyes, your endearin voice and the fire
of your manly hands and lips are ever with me
Ours is not to be a lost, faded love, no never
for I have prayed and trusted that once again
we shall stroll under the magnolias arm in arm
and be joined as one in candlelit bed chamber
or perhaps on the grassy banks of the Santee

I hear Rose Mae’s screams, “Miss Belle, Miss Belle,
git yoself out here rite now, the Colonel done come home!”
I run out the massive doors into a new world
It is you, My Love, astride that dark stallion
that once took you away from me, your back straight
your face more lined than I remembered but oh,
how the fire burns in your eyes as a smile
plays with the corners of your sensual mouth.
I must look like a peasant to you beneath straw hat
so different from the elegant lady you remember
You dismount your horse and with wide strides
you reach my side, this is all the heaven I will ever need
Your arms slip round me and your lips cover mine
while the servants cheer and clap, welcome home
Welcome home My Darlin General, My Brave Warrior
As your strength surrounds me, suddenly I don't feel
the need to be strong and all the fear and deprivation
of recent adversities seem to rise into places reserved
for the burdens of strong women who must once again
learn to be gentle, yieldin, tender and secure in love
while her tears and her load fall on broad shoulders at last

When the fight has been long and the backbone has been stiff to near breaking, when tears have dried up, n'er to flow again, just when the world is about to come tumblin' round her shoulders . . . Other shoulders, still broad, but full of pain seen and pain felt, is there for here . . . Blessed be this moment . . .

And as we see, he does, with a Southern Belle more beautiful than the surrounding flowers, and with anticipation thoughts that brings a crimson red on her blushing cheeks.

The southern woman was very strong back then and just as strong today. My mother is one of the most resillient women I've ever known. They kaept the home fires burning and kept living together as weel. This is beautiful.
Love and blessings,
Susan
