For everyone who has had a great love in their life end. Even though it didn't work out they still own a piece of your heart.

Poem Artwork

I Was Your Woman…

I wanted to go on through eternity always loving you.
But with all your defenses, my love couldn’t break through.
You held back your love so you would feel less pain.
I tried everything to crash through the barrier again and again.

My love was also vulnerable and I too felt pain.
From all your rejections time and time again.
I understood why you did it and tried not to give up.
But my heart finally broke and sadness made it erupt.

So now here we both sit, heartbroken and torn.
Love laughing at both of us, in all of its scorn.
The love we were given, the love that we shared.
Left our hearts broken all wounds were laid bare.

We thought our love would survive because of the depth,
However, we took it for granted ‘til nothing was left.
We have to go on alone and somehow make it through.
Even if it will be unbearable for us, this we must to do.

We have to make it through this heartache, I know we can.
For still in our hearts, I was your woman and you were my man.

You have written a deeply touching song which has lyrics that shine through shadow of its verses. Well done, Bonnie

Neat, lyrics that Dusty Springfield could sing to melt my heart.

PS. and knowing that "I Was Your Woman" wasn't for me...what was what Gone with the wind Rhett Butler said before going away?....

What beautiful lyrics this would make for a song as it has the meter and rhyme and an undying love that was not requited all the elements to make a great song. Your poetry is a joy to read.
