Poem written in Spanish after Gareth's cycling trip down the length of Argentina in 2002 (A loose translation into English follows)

Poem Artwork

Quiero volver, pobrecita Argentina

Desde La Quiaca a Ushuaia he visto

(If There is a God I ask Him This

If there is a God I ask Him this
That I might see Argentina again
That I may see her in health
That my wish may be reality

I have seen the incredibly beautiful orange stone of Jujuy
And I have seen the poverty in full daylight
I have heard the wind carrying its message of peace
And I have heard the tales of corruption

I have smelt the "mate" in vessels of friendship
And I have smelt the sweat of honest workers working for nothing
I have tasted the fruits of the land
And I have tasted the air in Buenos Aires full of disease

I want to return to feel the generosity of the people
I want to return but I don't want to return to feel the doubt
I want to return, poor little Argentina
I want to return, I wish that I could help her more

Argentina, you will overcome
Clean your tears and fight with hope
One has to fight, one has to see it through
In the end you will win, I know it

Country of rich traditions, you deserve much more
Country of countries, I lament your situation
Proud country, your enemy is within you
Incredible country, listen to my cries

From La Quiaca to Ushuaia I have seen
And the people that I met will always be in my heart
You will win Argentina, for certain
If there is a God

The reason there is an Argentina in the first place is because God does exist.
