Love's Ebb and Flow

 Love’s Ebb and Flow

Years have passed,
like sand slipping through fingers,
since they last walked this shore,
hand in hand, hearts entwined.

The Pacific whispers their history,
each wave a memory,
each tide a lesson learned,
in the dance of give and take.

They walk again,
barefoot on the cool sand,
the ocean’s breath at their feet,
reminding them of days gone by.

The sun dips low,
painting the sky with hues of hope,
as they find their rhythm,
in the ebb and flow of the sea.

Her hand in his,
a familiar warmth,
they spoke in silences,
words carried away by the wind.

The waves moved ever so soothingly toward them,
a gentle reminder,
that love, like the ocean,
was ever-changing, ever-present.

They paused,
letting the tide continue washing over their feet,

Taking the yesterdays of a conflicted past out to sea

The ebbing present making room for the next step.

They gazed down at the lapping across their feet,

An encore dance of the sea

Composing a new kind of balance

With its simple sign language of togetherness

Promising to continue its give-and-take reminder

So the two of them might take to heart the ebb and flow

As a melding force bringing together

Their different take of love.

And then the nocturnal dream awakened

Partners seeing in the dark

Compassion’s reminder

Love may feel different

But at least such feeling remains present

Even if only in dreams.

Men and women are inherently different, so every love between them has its ups and downs. I like how you used the sea as a metaphor for the process of a love over time. And, as we age, we tend to lose sight of the rougher edges and remember the highest points of enjoyment that we had during time we were together.

But, while the ebb and flow of the sea continues on eternally, human lifespans are such that all human love comes to an end and may be only a memory

The symbolic image of the ebb and flow of the sea serve well in this poem to enhance the rhythms and natural flow of the process of love and being lived that we all experience at some point in our lives. There is a tenderness to the tone of the poem that elevates its profound sense of meaning for the reader. Love's ebb and flow but like the sea always there.

The emotional spirit of this was palpable and spoke to me. Speaking personally: Some dreams show us what we could have had, some taunt us with what we were too ignorant and self-centered to keep. For me: my failures ended up being my greatest lessons. When I at last grokked that love is that condition where the happiness and welfare of the other person is more essential than my own, and that real love cultivates two souls, it nourishes two hearts, and it always gives more than it takes, then I understood my responsibility, and that too many of the failures in my life were because of me. Thanks for this honesty. Well done. Peace. r
