My Storm by Sheri Kaye Hoff

Poem Artwork

Looking over the water

at the beautiful horizon

the boat dipping and swaying

with the swell of the waves.

The sky is blue and clear.

Not even a hint of danger...

Yet, I feel tingles in my spine

warning me of what?

I am unsure. ..

Then I turn to look back at the shore

to suddenly see angry, gray clouds gathering along the hills.

A flash of lightning pierces the sky.

My heart pounds

as I make the decision...

Do I stay on the lake?

Or try to make it in?

Grimly, I rev the engine

and speed for shore.

Praying for safety....

Raindrops start beating my face

Thunder and lightning swirl.

I feel my breathing

and a roaring in my ears.

Fear and excitement mingling.

Triumph overcomes my soul

as I know that I wll make it to the marina.

Almost there...

Tension rips through my body as

I strain to keep the boat under control

Waves become angry.

Almost there....

My head pounds from bouncing on the waves.

I make it....

Turning in toward my slip.

People run to help.

Muscles aching as I try to

quickly tie.

Feet sliding on the wet surfaces.

Running to shelter.

I am complete soaked and cold.

A blanket wrapped around me

Thankful for safety:

I say a quick prayer.

I sigh and peer out at the storm.

You feel an emotional blanket reading this. The art is not to put yourself in danger in the first place, if you follow me.

I enjoyed the mounting drama of your choice words.

Sheri,
I could feel the wind picking up, the cold raindrops and that smell of a thunderstorm all vividly described in this wonderful poem. Thanks for the exciting journey back to shore. I enjoyed reading this wonderfully descriptive poem.

Peace, love, and light,

Hi Sheri, I've never experienced this, till now! You kept me in, I could almost feel those raindrops on me. Watching storms is what I prefer, or watching the sky after a nasty storm has passed. Thank you for taking me on this adventure... stay strong...

Bear

I have been in a few bad storms at sea in my younger days especially one I remeber up off the labrador coast where in a storm we were all ordered to life jackets and stand by the life boats if not working. So I can appreciate both the terror and the relief of this one.

You take us there with you in compelling verse; we feel the fear, the terror, as you dash for safer environs. Great writing; well done, Sheri!

This was an edge of the seat read, Sheri. Wonderful trip! I'm reminded of the tim my brother and I went fishing. A storm sprang upon us in much the manner you describe, except that we were in a rowboat. I brought us across the lake rowing so hard the bow was out of the water. We made it just ahead of the rain.

Thank God you're safe, Sherri. I'd head for shelter, away from water, myself. And don't stand under trees!! If you can hear thunder, you're close enough to be struck. (She - me - says, trying to capture lightning on film. LOL) An excellent, descriptive write of terror from Storm. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

And I like how you titled your poem: My Storm. Because it was. =] And now it is ours, too.
