But so is life. Yet what a
difference it makes on the road less
traveled. Find a herd of stubborn
long-horned sheep all over the
road high up in the Alps. The
view from a veranda overlooking
Lake Zell with the Alps as a
backdrop is one you’ll not find part
of any tour. A parking ticket in Rome
that fits perfectly into a frame.
One you will never pay and no one
will ever care.
Vienna wiener schnitzel with
home fries, red cabbage and a bottle
of Spatelese as only to be found in
a small restaurant out in the Austrian
country side. A little Italian lady who
wants to feed you and mother you
because her grandson lives in the
USA. Perfect timing to partake of
the festivities in Munich at the
Oktoberfest. Dance to a Bavarian
Band, and sing with your best or wurst
German voice.
Drive all over Ireland on the wrong
side of the road. Watch the sun go down
on Galway Bay. Sing “When Irish Eyes
Are Smilin’ “ with your new drinking
buddies; kiss the Blarney Stone; and
fall in love with every red-haired colleen
you see. Wake up to the sights and sounds
of the kindest souls this side of Heaven.
Pensiones are European bed and
breakfasts, but the breakfasts are
huge, the home cooking different and
special, and the smiles so genuine. The
farewells are tearful, exactly like leaving
your family behind. Because they are
your family and you will be connected
to them…forever.

Americans have the propensity to stay with other Americans, on guided tours or in hotels when they travel and don't get the experience of the people in the countries they visit. When I traveled around the world I stayed in homes of student friends of mine and found that my money was no good and they wanted to show me everything beautiful in their country and wanted me to stay longer––as long as I would like. I have found people to be the most important part of overseas travel. If you don't communicate with the people (most people in many countries speak English) you miss the experience entirely.
