What’s in a shoe?
The essay question was tough
I sat there in fear of my future
Why would they ask me such a question?
Did Plato ask it?
Was he troubled by it?
Oh I get it
Which came first—
The foot or the smell?
What a sneaky question
What a smelly question
I know
I’ll fake them out of their shoes
I’ll put the shoe on the other foot
Switch them both
Then ask
Are his feet on backwards?
Does he know his left from his right?
That’ll make their toes curl
Notice how the arch supports are
Working at cross purposes
He probably could not pass
A sobriety test
That’s too deep for them
They want to know about foundations
Or protection from the elements
Or posture
Or how to run a foot race
Or how to kick a football
Dancing perhaps
Different shoes for different purposes
The beach
Mountain climbing
Going to war
Hiking
Biking…
Times Up!
Pencils down please.
Acceptable answers are—
A tongue
Laces
Insoles
The size
All others fail.

I almost wrote a poem about a glass slipper and completely scrapped it. I was not in a Cinderella mood and lately all I can wear are snow boots laced up to my knees and that still won't help against the snow....to answer your question what's in a shoe is mostly snow lately! ;)
