Terror in the Night

It’s that creepy crawly time of year
That kids all love and grown ups fear
When ghosts and goblins linger near
Halloween is upon us.

Stop chunkin’ punkins and carve ‘em up
Break out the cider an’ fill your cup
Put on your ghastly foul make up
Night time is falling on us.

“Ow-oo ow-oo” the wolves are cryin’
Sorrowful sounds like critters dyin’
Most folks scared and others lyin’
It’s time for trick or treatin’.

Look out for slinky slimy things
With bulging eyes and scaly wings
And horrid tales the south wind sings
The dead are walkin’ near us.

They drag their feet with scrapy sounds
Like zombies with no earthly bounds
Your heart just pounds and pounds and pounds
The end is near you fear.

They arrive in droves at your front door
You hide in corners on the floor
And when you can’t bear any more
Your door bell d
ing-a-lings.

You crawl like rats in single file
Or sinners slinkin’ down the aisle
With 911 on your speed dial
It’s time to face your fate.

Your open door reveals the truth
Of days of yore and times of youth
Like a dozen feet in one phone booth
And giggles all around.

“Twick or tweet” they chant at you
Their hands thrust out they want their due
Or else they’ll haunt you through and through
And some are three feet tall.

Whence comes these goblins with tiny voices
As your heart slows your mind rejoices
So little time so many choices
You give them all you’ve got.

And in our neighborhood, $50 bucks worth of treats will last about 20 minutes, and then it's lights out. They come in droves, adults included.
