As more and more U.S. states pass laws that declare a fetus is a person, it seems appropriate to enunciate what those rules of law really mean.

The Unborn

Few living entities are as vulnerable
You neither cry nor sing
You make no demands;
Your greatest asset is
Your future—
Sometimes bleak
Without food
Or drink
Subject only to what
Is leftover
For sustenance
Yet you must survive.

How else can you be denied
Health care
Or education
Or made to beg for the
Selfish chance to find your
Potential?

Now you will inherit
Nothing not even the wind
All the assets are spoken for
None left over for you
No time for nurturing
Or praising
No liberty.

Accept your place
Live in disgrace
With your preconditions
In the fields
In the factories
Where once there was the
The honored right
To serve others.

But do not complain
The rule of law is your new master
And now you have the gift of
Servitude
At its beck and call.
But only as long as
You never ask for more
Than your masters
Can find in their
Empty hearts.

Ideals and other pursuits
Of heart and soul
Are only figments of another time
Tried but found lacking
And unworthy of your new
Right to life.

YES IT IS IRONIC THAT THE SAME INDIVIDUALS WHO FIGHT FOR THE RIGHTS OF THE UNBORN, WILL PROBABLY BE THE SAME INDIVIDUALS WHO WILL MAKE THE LAWS WHICH WILL DENY THEM THEIR INALIENABLE RIGHTS. BUT THEN, ALL OF US ARE IN GOD'S HANDS....JESUS IS ALL THE HOPE THE WORLD HAS, EDWARD, AND HE ALLOWS THINGS WE CANNOT UNDERSTAND BUT BY FAITH...ACCEPT. THE UNBORN...A PARADOXICAL WORK. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

If the unborn have no future rights, then should they be born? You open a Pandora's box with your poem. You claim it isn't about abortion, but the question does raise its ugly head from your words.

Somehow, I missed this poem the first time around. But I saw immediately what you were expressing and the utter truth of it. The hypocrisy of those who claim, "right to life." By life, they mean a lonely existence without any rights except the trickle-down crumbs that the masters choose to dispense in disgust to the "lazy" masses without money or opportunity.

Michael: I agree with you. But my poem is not about abortion. It's about pretending to care about human life before birth, but then showing utter contempt for human life after the child is born.

I have very mixed views on abortion. Suffice it to say, I could not do it myself, but on the other hand, I believe it's a woman's right to choose.

Your ability to pluck the headlines and carve such a poetic symbol of reality, and yet thought provoking hope that we, the fortunate ones, can do something about it. Keep up the encouraging of us to get up and not be afraid to proclaim, "I"m mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore."

An amazing plea, beautifully rendered.
