Democracy

Democracy is a concept that drives the human soul
It reaches out to you and me and leads us to our goal
It shows us how to share and give and
Do our level best
At keeping ourselves and those we love
Participants in the quest.

There is no higher calling of that we can be certain
Than to pen the final verse on life’s eternal curtain
We came we saw we lit the torch
We fought with all our glory
To keep the faith with one and all
In history’s moving story.

Where were you on that fateful day
in January of 2021?
When thugs attacked our Capitol
The fight had just begun.
Whose side were you rooting for?
History knows and you can bet
It cannot be undone.

They say a coward dies a thousand deaths
A hero dies but once
And so the moving finger writes the names
of those that it confronts;
Neither you nor I can change a word
Or make heroes out of runts.

But deeds will tell our story
As freedom takes one on the chin
There is no greater glory
When heroes fight to win--
Cowards craw back into the swamp
And Democracy flourishes again.

This is a beautiful poem in which I can heartily understand and agree. The attack on the Capital and the current aftermath scares me, but I have to believe that good will prevail...if more people understood what we would be losing if "they" should win.

What a great poem, Edward! Let's hope Democracy flourishes again.

I really appreciate the ideas covered in the poem as well as your excellent rhyming.

There are right crazies and left crazies when are the normal Americans going to take our country back?

You have reminded us that "for the people and by the people" means all the people in fair and representative voting for our leaders. Coups and uprisings to seize power for those of wealth and assumed privilege chip away at what our democracy means. It is fragile, and can be overturned by misguided people who vote.

Your poem and your many articles remind those less critical, watchful, that we must always guard our democracy with all our might. And the word is mightier than the sword.

I am for the brave ones dear Edward, the ones that have
the best interest of the Country on their foremost list,
Thank you for sharing, your patriotic message of hope.
Be blessed, ps I sent you an email,

Never want to Trump it again. The horror that unravelled before the eyes of the world was insane.
Churchill once said - lies get halfway around the world before the truth has time to get its pants on.

The poem has an excellent galloping pace.

Let us hope, Ed, that the Capitol was not just the beginning, for your last stanza needs to remain a strong stand against any future attempts. Lots of chatter going on re: attacking state, local houses of governance in the 2022 midterms by the same extreme right-wing crazies. Let's trust states and local institutions of government are loading up their defense means. Thanks for giving this subject some calm and hyperbole-vacant words, complimented by some of your expertise.
