This story shows a dog living in a situation that is very real. It is also a story where the author will practice her skills before writing the novel about a dog.
I am something my owners call a Golden Retriever... Goldy for short.
I love my home, though I don't think it likes me. I am often sent out to sit in the backyard and while I loved exploring when I was younger, it's now a boring cage to me.
Today is just another day... I hear the door open and close very quickly, which means the first person has left for work. I wait for the usual sound of a car door slamming and the hum of the motor. Soon, the big yellow school bus will come pick up the little people.
On cue, my ears pick up the sounds of little feet scattering to reach the bus and they leave as well. Before, they would at least wave or show some kind of affection before leaving. Now, they're busy with their own little lives. I miss the little human with who I was supposed to be best friends with.
Finally, the biggest female human walks out the door and heads my way. I miss being played with, so I run her way and jump up on her. I'm sure she'll love playing with me as before! I miscalculated my jump and have knocked her down. She screams, "Hey! Wait! AAHH!" as I run circles around her, jumping, barking and licking her cheeks or hands.
I run away to grab one of my toys, which just happens to be a stick that I neatly hid under the ground, and put it on her lap as she's sitting. I never brought my most prized possession to the humans before, but I think that if I do, they'll love me again.
I notice the silence that she's displaying. Looking into her face, I step back.
"Look at this mess!" she pointed at the mud from both the stick and from being pushed down on the ground. "You stupid dog! I was going to be promoted today and this is my only good suit! I just bought it yesterday for this occasion! What am I going to do now? You ruined everything!"
I don't understand every word that she's saying, but I feel that she's very angry for some reason. Maybe she didn't like my treasured stick?
Suddenly, I remember the bone that I buried a long time ago. It was next to the fence. I dash over there and start digging where I hid it. It must cheer her up!
"No! Not my garden!" She runs over and pushes me away. I don't understand why she doesn't want me to dig up the bone. I am confused beyond belief now...
I lower my head and slowly walk over to the doghouse. I lie inside and think about my life. If only I could speak with the humans... I'd tell them that I want to run around with them, because I'm bored sitting here all day. I wish they knew more about what a dog actually is and what I'd need to be happy... If only they didn't buy me as a "Christmas present" for the little human. I am not a toy... I am a living being too!
I close my eyes and decide to rest again.

This is a kind of... "practice" story before writing my novel, which will also feature a dog that lives through real situations. So, give your dog a hug today and remember, you and your dog don't always have the same perception!
