She could see the clearing in the distance, a glowing light at the end of what seemed to be a never-ending tunnel, but the faster she ran, the farther away the opening seemed.
She wondered for a fleeting moment, if perhaps her mind was playing tricks with her and she should alter her course. Knowing that what lie in the shadows of the forbidden forest, paled in comparison to the horrors that lie just beyond the fencerow, still she dared not stray from the path that lay open before her.
Nor would she give in to the frustration and fear that threatened to slow her pace; even though her limbs ached with fatigue and her breathing was labored. Freedom was close at hand and she refused to look back, as her very life depended on reaching her goal…that lay in wait, in the distance up ahead.
