     Light and Dark rise again...
(Read "Two Champions" first, then this will make a lot more sense)

Two Champions Reawakened

Utter dark

Absolute silence

Unbound time

and then...

The Cataclysm

From a point, subtle and singular

All that is

All that was

and All that ever shall come into being

burst forth

All of nothing

racing out

to become all that is everything

and from it

the Two Champions are reborn

"Perpetual Light"

and "Eternal Dark"

Titans newly formed

Yet this time,

they carried the memory of what they had been

In an epoch

now irrelevant to this

they had been warriors

enemies to the last

fighting for those they were bound to represent

In that age now passed

they knew to be nothing else

so dutifully

and with supreme honor

they carried out their charge

But now,

in this new existence

in this new procession of time

something was different

their will here was in fact their own

They realized that their ancient feud

had been brought into need

by their very workings

by the sublime creations of pure coincidence

allowed by their ignorance to the persistence of chance

Upon this revelation

that they were responsible for the suffering and pains

of war made by the

coalescence of matter into life

They asked the inescapable question

"Why?"

Why should we set

such unspeakable horrors

to life once again?

Would they not repeat their folly?

They were incapable

by their very nature

to peaceably co-exist

Their conceits unquenchable

Their greed too pervasive

They could not simply be

They could not simply live

They could not simply learn

They had to quarrel

They had to make war

In this flash

the instant of the beginning

before the grand tapestry of all would again unfurl

"Perpetual Light" and "Eternal Dark"

made a pact

They swore an oath to one another

that they would not

through ignorance or intent

allow such beings

to propagate once again

To the benefit of the whole of creation

nothing that resembled the life

of their memories past

would spring forth

to wreak havoc anew

Having settled their accord

they parted ways

to set  forth the creation

of the fabric of space and time

anew

They spent immeasurable time

creating wonders

and delights

throughout the vastness

of their shared expanse

Peacefully

Joyously

They experimented

with all of the innumerable possibilities of creation

That is... all but one

Together they had filled the universe

to it's near limitless edge

with unparalleled marvels

and yet somehow...

it still felt empty

How could this be?

It was beautiful

It was ordered

It was perfect in its serenity

Why then, did it feel incomplete?

The Two Champions met

to discuss the incongruity

of what now lay before them

It should have been their finest hour

the final stroke on a masterpiece

When the two first took sight

one of the other

their expressions said more

than all words

could possibly muster

Each knew what was missing

Each knew that the other knew it as well

They said without speaking

"A masterpiece is not a masterpiece

without someone to deem it so."

Saddened

They knew what simply

must

be

done

They raised their hands

to grasp the hilts of their mighty swords

and slowly

cautiously

withdrew into the shadows

They knew

that a universe without life is nothing to behold

that true meaning spawns

from the acceptance of the existence of different perspectives

that order holds no distinction without a little chaos

They knew

that the imperfect thing known as life

must again be introduced

and through its natural evolution

They would forced to meet on the battlefield once again

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
