 GLIMPSE

Intro

Narrator: “Welcome to the deepest recesses of human consciousness, where inspiration and insight ebb and flow like a rolling tide through the mind. The high tide seeps with overflowing creativity and splashes your shoreline with ideas that can only crash the shore to manifest themselves into greatness. But as you are soon to find out, the tides will eventually recede and we’re suddenly left wading through the shallow depths of desperation, misery and despair, just waiting for the high tide to come once again”.

“We all live within two sides of the human mind and in the middle is the river which will lead us into anywhere and nowhere simultaneously. But it is up to us to recognize that we are, in fact standing on the shoreline during the tides of the mind . . .

Narrator: “For your amusement, Dr. Albert K. Fennyman a scientist of ill repute and that would be putting it mildly, is what his ex-colleagues along with most of the scientific community would say.  It is also said that on any given Monday the tide of a game could change, well for Dr. Albert K. Fennyman the tide is about to alter, alter the state of not only his existence, but that of the entire world. You see while working in his secluded grey painted florescent lit brick and concrete laboratory he has invented a method to provide clean fresh energy which could sustain the entire planet for an eternity for only pennies a day, but that is not his biggest discovery, as he and his assistant Jeffries noticed that while they monitored the experiment through a protective class wall that there was someone on the other side peeking through a hole in the wall watching them and trying desperately to get their attention. As Dr. Fennyman and his assistant Jeffries looked closely to see who was watching them the image became clearer and looked familiar somehow. Looking closer at the figure they realized that what they were looking at was Dr. Fennyman! It was like the scene from Dorian Grey when he unveiled his painting and saw himself aged. Dr. Fennyman stared in awe at what appeared to be his double who was old with long grey and white hair his face was full of dust and soot attempting to communicate with them from behind the wall on the other side of their experiment . . . We invite you to take a glimpse into the darkest corner of one man’s mind where the light at the end of the tunnel is enlightenment standing on the shoreline during the tides of the mind. . . .

The human mind is a phenomenon of nature and some believe that we only use 10% of its potential. But there are others that use more like in the case of Dr. Albert K. Fennyman, his mind has allowed him to get a glimpse of a possible future his dilemma is how to precede?

One week ago . . .

Albert woke up abruptly gasping for air and sweating profusely causing his wife DeJa to awaken. He had just had a nightmare and his wife moved closer to comfort him.

“Albert,” said DeJa softly and soothingly as she placed her arms about him, “did you have a nightmare?”

Getting his composure as his wife held him laying her head upon his shoulders Albert begun telling her of his night terror . . .

Albert told his wife that he had dreamt that he had gone to the grocery store and had walked into a robbery that was taking place. He said that in opening the door to the store it had startled the robbers and then one of them shot him.

Later on that week . . .

Frightened by his dream Albert decides to go to another grocery store rather than his regular grocer. As he approached the grocery store he noticed a man sitting in a car out in front who looked suspicious. So instead of going across the street and into the store Albert choose to stand and wait out of curiosity. Just then a man who came from around the corner walked into the store and as the door open a shot from a gun rang out, the door swung open and two men with ski masks came running out and jumped into the car that was waiting out in front. Screeching off the car swerved from side to side before straightening out and speeding down the block. The grocery store clerk then came running out of the door with his cordless phone in his hand yelling for help . . .

Albert returned home and without the groceries that DeJa had sent him to get. Still in shock at what he had seen he then told his wife about what had occurred. He told her that if it wasn’t for his dream that he would be dead now and that she would be a widow.

Later on that day . . .

Albert still taken back from what occurred or almost happened to him earlier today notices a red headed woman wearing a green and white blouse waiting at the corner for the light to change. As the light changes the woman steps out into the street and is struck by the city bus!  Albert startled by what he just witnessed closed his eyes and gasped in utter terror. When Albert opened his eyes he found that nothing had happened, that there wasn’t any woman’s body lying there crushed dead in the pedestrian crosswalk by the city bus. In normal circumstances he would say that his imagination was playing tricks on him, but in light of the pass events this vision disturbed Albert greatly as he was now responsible for another person’s life. . .

Going downstairs Albert stood on the corner waiting, waiting for the redheaded woman with the green and white blouse to show up so that he could prevent the accident from happening. As Albert waiting for the woman to show he watched the light signals for the traffic as well as for the pedestrians and all seem to be working properly. Albert waited and waited and then he decided to go back upstairs and sit at his table that was by the window and watch for the woman, but she never showed.

Albert fearing for the woman’s life waited by the window for three days straight, but to no avail, the redheaded woman with the green and white blouse never showed. DeJa became quite concerned for her husband’s wellbeing as he wasn’t eating due to his worry for this unknown woman. During his apparition Albert had seen the woman get hit by a city bus while crossing the street, but he had checked the signals and they were working just fine. So why would the bus take the light killing the woman? He couldn’t figure it out. And unless the woman wanted or wants to commit suicide it didn’t make any sense, but he couldn’t and didn’t believe that she wanted to end her life, he could not accept that.

His worrying was really taking a toll on him, his health as his wife tried to get him to eat. Sitting in front of his window Albert doses off and as his head begins to nod to where it was almost lying on the table a loud screeching of a bus’ breaks jars his body and causes him to awaken.

Looking out the window there was nothing out there the street was empty. Getting up to get some water he returns to his window and there she was the redheaded woman wearing the green and white blouse. Quickly shouting in a panic out to the woman while spilling some of the water from his cup onto the table Albert tells the woman not to move!

The woman startled by Albert’s outburst towards her as a strange man tells her not to move that he’ll be right there. The woman didn’t know whether to run or to stay put decided to listen to the strange man shouting from the window.

Making sure that the street was clear and safe to cross Albert quickly ran across the street to where the woman was standing. Now he stood in front of her bent over gasping for air trying to catch his breath the woman asked Albert if he was alright.

Albert’s wife DeJa heard their front door slam and seeing that her husband was no longer in the apartment she went to the window and saw him bent over trying to catch his breath as he stood in front of the redheaded woman. “Albert, are you alright,” DeJa shouted concerned about her husband welfare.

Albert as he was still trying to catch his breath responded; “yes dear.”

But DeJa could not hear him and so she shouted again; “Al are you okay?!”

“Yes dear, cough, cough, I’m okay,” Albert answered, but this time his wife was able to hear him.

In seeing that her husband was alright, DeJa then waves and smiles at the young redheaded woman.

“What is going on,” the redheaded woman questioned curiously.

Albert getting his composure responded to the woman; “you get hit by a bus.”

The woman looked at Albert as though he was crazy and responded; “What?!”

“If you cross the street you’re going to be struck and killed by a city bus,” Albert answered as he turned around and took a look at the traffic and pedestrian crosswalk lights.  Looking at the traffic light it was green, but just the pedestrian crosswalk light turned green as well, then out of nowhere a city bus went zooming by and drove right past them as it was heading back to the garage.

The woman stood there in complete awe realizing that if she would had crossed when the pedestrian crossing signal would have turned green that she would have been dead if it had not for Albert’s intervention.

Albert stood there relieved and exhausted as the redheaded woman hugged him for saving her life.

Back home DeJa was so happy that not only that her husband was a hero, but now he would go back to being normal if there was such a thing, but at least he would eat and could now take a bath!

As Albert and DeJa sat at the dining room table DeJa asked her husband if he thinks that he would have anymore premonitions. Albert responded that he didn’t know, but he did know that he didn’t want to, that it was too exhausting both mentally, emotionally and physically.

“Maybe you can see if we’re going to hit the lotto,” said DeJa jokingly which brought a smile to his face as he answered; “I don’t know dear, so far my visions have been leaning toward the macabre, preventing death”.

“But how come you didn’t see the other man’s death, the one who took your place in the grocery store shooting,” DeJa concernedly asked . . .

The following day . . .

Albert walks into his regular grocery store . . . “Hi Greg,” said Albert in seeing his friend and store owner.

“Hi Al,” said Greg as he walked from behind the counter and shook his hand.

“How’s things going” Albert asked.

“Well Al we got robbed a few days ago and one of my customers got shot,” answered Greg.

Albert’s face went pale in hearing what Greg had just said.

“Hey Albert, are you alright, you look as though you’ve seen a ghost,” said Greg in seeing the look on his friend’s face.

After Albert had gotten himself together he told Greg the grocer about his dream and what happened at the other grocery store and about the redheaded woman.

Albert returned home, but this time he didn’t forget the groceries. Placing the bags on the kitchen table he began to tell DeJa about what had happened at Greg’s grocery store. DeJa’s jaw almost dropped to the floor as her eyes became wide as her husband told her about what Greg had told him. The thing was that the customer wasn’t anyone that Greg knew, he wasn’t a regular, that was the first time Greg had ever seen him and unfortunately for the man it was his last.

The following day . . .

Albert while getting some electronic components for his project and talking to the store manager Sara who said that she was going to purchasing a vintage blue Mustang Convertible.

That night Albert is awakened from a nightmare where he and Sara’s father were standing alongside one another in pitch black room where a light is shown on Sara and her blue Mustang. As she got into the car and started it up the car exploded and then burst into flames.

Albert tells his wife and DeJa tells him that he had to go and let Sara know not to purchase the vehicle. Albert couldn’t fall back to sleep and stayed up the rest of the night pondering his dilemma as to how he going to explain his reasoning to Sara to convince her enough so that she wouldn’t buy the car of her dreams? Her dreams he repeated in his mind, her dream car had become his nightmare . . .

The next morning . . .

Albert went back to the electronic store and spoke with Sara. He told her about his dream and how real it seemed and begged her not to purchase the car. He even went so far to tell her about the grocery store shooting and his dream that saved him from being shot and killed and he told her about the redheaded woman with the green and white shirt and the bus, he told her of all the things that had occurred, but even that didn’t seem to make a dent.

Sara didn’t know what to say about Albert’s dreams, premonitions, visions that had all came to fruition, but that was not going to prevent her from buying her dream car.

Sara told Albert not to worry that it was only a dream and everything that happened before were coincidences and had nothing to do with her.

Later on that day Sara had purchased the blue Mustang and was running some errands. As she pulled out of a strip mall parking lot onto the road when a man in a white van yelled out to her telling her to get out of the car!

Without hesitation Sara put her car in park as she recalled what Albert had told to her earlier that morning. Getting out of her car Sara begun run away from her car and had only gotten a few steps before her blue Mustang exploded with such a force that it knocked Sara down onto the black tarred pavement. Lying there in the middle of the street shook up, trembling in disbelief she looked back at her car as it had burst into flames consuming the vehicle and all its contents.

Walking toward the electronic components store Sara walked out talking on her cell. Seeing Albert approaching Sara immediately disconnects the call and shouts hysterically as she pointed her finger at Albert saying; “You! You! You”!

Albert totally puzzled as to why Sara was shouting at him and what she was insinuating continued to walk towards her and as he arrived in front of the store Sara walked out carrying her burnt leather shoulder bag that she had taken from out of the car after the fire department extinguished the burning blaze.

Sara told Albert what had happened to her. Albert although relieved that Sara was well was concerned with all that was happening to him and why?

Arriving home Albert is met by two detectives who were talking with his wife while they waited for him to show so that they could question him what he knew about Sara Kaplan’s car, the explosion and what he knew about it.

Identifying themselves detective Jackson and Boudreaux questioned Albert and asked him what was his relationship with Sara Kaplan?

“What do you mean by what kind of relationship he has with Sara,” DeJa now quite annoyed with the detectives line of questioning, “What are you trying to insinuate?

“Albert, don’t answer any of their questions until we speak with our attorney,” DeJa said to her husband.

“There’s no need for you to get a lawyer,” responded Detective Boudreaux, “we are merely trying to ascertain whether or not that foul play was involved.”

“Yes,” said Detective Jackson, “until we can get the forensic report back, this is only protocol. If we suspected you of anything we would have to have read you your rights,” Detective Jackson concluded.

“Not reading a person their rights have never stopped the police from arresting people before,” DeJa angrily remarked, “So if you want to talk to my husband or me you’ll have to go through our attorney.

Detectives Jackson and Boudreaux knew that unless they had something to charge Albert with that there was nothing that they could do, so they left after telling the Fennymans’ that they would be hearing from them once the forensic report comes in.

After the detectives left both DeJa and Albert went inside their apartment. DeJa was still upset by the detectives’ questions and implicating remarks, while Albert deliberated if this is what he gets for saving peoples’ lives what else was to come and what was to become of him?

Later that evening the Fennymans received a call from the detective Jackson who told them that is was a fuel leak that caused Ms. Kaplan’s vehicle to catch fire and explode. Although both of them were relieved by the call DeJa was still upset and Albert was still concerned for their future. Albert didn’t want to have any further premonitions, visions or dreams that foretell the future. He didn’t feel that he should be the one responsible for anyone’s life, but his wife and his own.

The following morning . . .

The morning was beautiful as Albert had rested peacefully without any nightmarish incidents. A delivery of an electrical component had come in today so now he was able to proceed with his experiment, so he called his assistant Jeffries, went to the electronic shop to pick the component from Sara and went to his laboratory on the outskirts of the city.

Albert and his assistant Jeffries worked hard all afternoon completing Albert’s prototype and as they readied themselves to test it Albert had a vision . . .

Albert saw himself preparing his experiment and after he had told Jefferies to enter in the mathematical equation, as  Jefferies was about stepped away from the protective glass that separated them from the machine that Albert and designed and built, Jefferies noticed something on the other side of room. Jefferies made Albert aware and as they both looked at what it could be, they both had discovered that it was Albert, but Albert as an old man. The older Albert yelled out from a hole in the wall for the younger Albert not to allow Jefferies to enter in the equation to device that if he did he would destroy the planet and kill everything on it.

Jefferies asking Albert if he was ready had awoken him from his vision and asked Albert for the equations so that he could enter them.  Albert in awe of the vision, the premonition that he had just experienced, told Jeffries to shut down the machine that he had to check his calculations and for Jefferies to go home.

After deep deliberation Albert decided to dismantle his machine and closed up the lab.

As he sat at the dinner table with DeJa, she could see his faraway look and asked him what was wrong. Albert wanted to tell her, but didn’t think that he should, it wasn’t a single person that he was responsible for this time, it was the fate of entire world. Albert felt that it frightened him enough and to share this with his wife would be cruel. One of them worrying was enough, besides he felt that he could handle it better by himself.

He told his wife that he was going to take a walk that he would be back shortly. As he walked he looked at the calculations that he had written on a piece of paper, the same calculations that he was going to give to Jefferies to enter into the computer.

Crumbling the piece of paper with the calculations on it and tossing in a nearby trash can, Albert begun to walk back home and as he walked home a hand went into the trash to retrieve the paper.

Opening up the paper to view Albert’s calculations was Jefferies. Walking with the calculations in his hands Jefferies is ecstatic knowing that he would be the one who will make the doctors’ experiment work and get all the fame, glory and not to mention the money. Jefferies was going to be rich beyond his wildest dreams and then . . . BAM! Screech!

Looking back at the sounds he just heard Dr. Albert Fennyman smiles contently as he is now able to breathe easy as the world was now safe and he could return home to his wife and live . . . and live . . .

A crowd stood around the man’s body lying in the street as police try to keep them back while the paramedics strive to revive the man who was struck by the bus.

As they press upon the man’s chest administering CPR the man’s hand opens as the last flicker of life leaves his body and the paper in which he held leaves his hand and blows underneath the bus and on to the street into oncoming traffic.

The paper blows like a tumbling tumble weed down the street underneath passing cars and trucks eluding the vehicles massive tires and is about to blow into a sewer drain when all of a sudden it is picked up by a young man holding a quantum physics book . . .

Some will tell you that they are the masters of their fate, that they make their own luck and control their own destinies, but what you have seen here is that control is only an illusion and our fate is in the hands of something more. . .

A very good story along the lines of Rod Sterling's The Twilight Zone. The ending is especially good.

However, the delivery falls short sometimes of the intent. The narrative is okay, but the action seems stilted and unnatural (like narrative). Knowing human nature, people do not readily respond to strangers shouting warnings unless they are simple warnings like "stop!" or "watch out!." You have to be more subtle and creative in the way that people are informed of someone else's premonition.

On the other hand, while I was perfectly content with my 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado, my father was always looking into in buying new cars and suggested that I look into replacing the Toronado with a bargain that the local Oldsmobile dealer had. The car he recommended was a powder blue 1970 Mustang convertible with a white top and a six-cylinder engine. I didn't even drive the car because I found it quite silly after owning the powerful Toronado that he would want me to buy a girly car.

Based on your story, sure glad I didn't buy that car that my father recommended… Déjà vu.
