A woman catches someone trying to torch her house and takes care of him. Inspired by the movie "Lost River."

The old woman wakes in the middle of the night as she has for many years now. Alone in a large house, she still wakes every two hours to take care of necessities and make sure things are okay. She hears the rustling of leaves outsie and knows someone is coming. She has been expecting him for some time, and she is ready.

Grandma catherine has been silent since the death of her husband and the loss of the family park many years ago. She is not as lost as some think, however, and she is not the only one in her family with issues. One of those family members has her on high alert lately, and she has been waiting for him. She knows he has been setting fires again, and while he approaches, she walks carefully to an old gun cabinet. The carved oak of the cabinet reminds her of her husband. No ime for memories now as she turns the key in the lock. By the time he reaches her door, she will have a glass of whiskey on the kitchen table and the gun in her lap.

A disheveled man approaches the big victorian house from the rear. He is carrying a gas can and he is not aware of why, but he feels the need to watch this place burn. This is the first occupied house he has tried, although he is not aware of this either. He dows know that his brother will kill him if he finds out he did another one. The fear is just part of the rush now.

The kitchen is silent, too quiet as the woman sips bourbon from her glass. A little now and then helps to steady the nerves. She sees the outline of a man outside and raises the rifle. The sound of him jimmying the lock and her clicking off the safety are simultaneous. The man does not know what hit him as he is thrown back by the shot coming through the window.

There is little further noise as the woman takes her glass of whiskey into the living room, and puts on her favorite record. She feels some pressure in her chest and wants to sit down, and recover from the force of the rifle. She listens to her favorite song and fades into a deep sleep. A police patrol responds to the sound of a gunshot and finds the woman, peaceful as only the dead can be, in her favorite chair. The record is still playing, "Deep Purple Dream" as recorded by Paul Samuel Whiteman.
