An old woman near death sees the light.
On the night of the full moon, the old woman lies in wait, immersed in her cherished memories, fearing one day it could all end. But she doesn't like to think those dark thoughts, and usually succeeds in pushing them away. But tonight, this feeling of uneasiness remains to haunt her, perhaps brought on by her recent heart troubles that have confined her to her bed.

No, Loretta would rather spend her time thinking about days past, when she was young and still had her looks. When she was told countless times by the many men she dated how beautiful she was, although she didn't see herself that way. Adorable, or cute, was more like it, in a natural way. The way she tied her long tawny-gold hair back into a ponytail, and the faint scattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose. Plus, she was blessed with a nice figure and shapely legs, which she regularly flaunted by wearing short skirts and high heels.

"You are my pearl," Gordon once told her as he stroked her long sun-kissed hair, as they lay on a blanket on the deserted end of the beach. It was their quiet spot where they could be alone, away from prying eyes.

Gordon, her high school sweetheart, was home on leave from the Navy. The Korean conflict was going strong, and he was stationed on a vessel off that coast. But this week he traded his spiffy white bell-bottomed uniform for his customary hometown white tee and dungarees with the rolled-up cuffs, and sneakers.

"Promise me, Lor, that you'll always be my girl," he asked that day, in between passionate, slippery kisses, as they got hot and heavy right there on the beach. Gordon on his back, Loretta straddling him in just her pink bikini bottoms, long hair and heavy breast's dangling over him. "Promise me you will wait for me."

"Yes." she answered, between quick, short, breaths, and butterfly kisses, along his neck as she moved lower on his body, skimming her lips lightly across his stomach, down to the prominent bulge in his tight blue bathing shorts. He gently grasped her head, guiding it lovingly. It was a sunny afternoon of picnic, pleasure, and promises.

Loretta would always say that the blue-eyed Gordy, what she favored calling him, was her first, and only love. She was nineteen, Gordon, just twenty-two. But unlike her girlhood idols, Sandra Dee and Frankie Avalon, who always lived happily ever after in their movies, it proved different

in real life. Gordon never returned from the war. His ship was torpedoed the day he returned from leave. Loretta was truly heart-broken, and to this day still mourned her dreadful loss.

Now, her thoughts often turned to that torrid love affair terminated by war. They planned on getting married later when he got out, and moving to California. She wondered what her life would have been out west. Maybe she would have turned into a "Hollywood floozy", the term her mom used to call movie actresses.

Mom had no cause to worry. Loretta never left. After Gordy, she stayed home working on her reputation as a loose woman. That meant men. How she loved them; the thrill of being chased, and then, the conquest. She had made herself a promise, to never give her heart to anyone ever again. The only promise she ever kept.

Loretta opens her eyes, moist with tears. How she misses Gordy, and the life they could have had together, if only he didn't die, if only she had kept him with her...safe.

"Lor...Lor."

She hears her name spoken as if on a breeze. She turns over and see's a dark shadowy figure silhouetted against the gentle moonlight funneling in from the dark night sky.

"Who's there?" she asks in a quivery voice, as she struggles to sit up against the headboard.

"Do not be afraid, Lor, my love...I am here for you."

"Who are you? come closer so I can see you."

Loretta gasps, clutching the blankets to her chest, as the hazy figure seems to float closer. It is Gordy.

"Go away, I don't believe in ghosts! You're not real!"

"I am, as much as I ever been, Lor, and now your time has come. I have been waiting, have been sent, for you...my love. All you have to do is take my hand." From the folds of his loose colorless garment, he extends a slender hand.

"No!" she shrieks, backing away from him. "I'm not ready, I need more time--"

"Lor, all you need to do is take my hand, and we will be together forever. Isn't that what you've always wanted? There is a place for us in the light, my beautiful, loving, Loretta.

"Yes, but...perhaps I could have just a little more time? Please, Gordy...".

His hand remains extended. His eyes are pools of love and compassion that she knows she cannot resist.
