"The Humanoid Dilemma," a 99,000-word science fiction novel for which I am seeking an agent, depicts the creation of photosynthesizing humanoids by scientists and their threat to the human species while the world experiences an annihilating nuclear holocaust.
Genius? Psychopath? Mark Rollins couldn’t decide what description fit his father’s personality best. It’s 2075. The population is over 12 billion. Planet Earth is suffering from antagonistic governments, spent resources, global contamination, and eugenic atrocities, in which geneticists are capable of modifying DNA in any way they wish.
With an almost limitless monetary fortune, his family of royal blood had constructed a virtual castle in the middle of the Great Florida Everglades to survive a very predictable planetary meltdown and create humanoids who could survive intolerable environmental conditions. But as altruistic as it seemed, was this the real reason his father instituted a secret research plan to change the human genome? What they produced in their secret lair was potentially much more threatening to the survival of the human species than the nuclear holocaust the world had experienced.
The story’s protagonist (NICHOLAS ROLLINS) looks at the world in a rational, empathetic way, in spite of his father’s overwhelming outrages and sadistic behavior, all the while wondering if he has inherited his father’s evil genes. His loving mother (EVELYN), under duress from her thoroughly promiscuous husband, nurtures him through early life to the best of her ability. His wife (KAREN) provides love, understanding, and a well-needed stability in his life. His domineering father (FREDERICK) expresses a raging psychopathic personality. Their research, methods of raising their strange humanoid products, and what happens when they become threatened reveal what can go wrong when scientists interfere with the human genome.
