By pulling out problems from the source, we can have freedom.
We all have weeds in our life. By that I mean problems, issues that plague us. For some of us it’s procrastinating, others it’s lying or deception or even hatred. I battle discouraging thoughts. The theme for this true - to- life story came about over a period of several years.
A certain friend of mine, I will call “ Missy”,showed me her backyard flowers once several years ago. She seemed to have many and various types of pretty and colorful flowers of different sizes and shapes and lengths.Some were in hanging planters, others in ground. All of them were beautiful in their own way. At the time,our flower bed wasn’t in existence yet.Thanks to “ Missy”, who promised to share her perennial flowers with me when the time came. Some of the flowers I admired were black-eyed Susans, miniature purple irises, and echinacea, also known as purple cone flowers. A certain bright red flower caught my eye. The flowers which ironically were called Lucifer’s, were brilliant red and resembled liles. I don’t recall her offering them or asking if I may have some of the Lucifers. The name of this particular beautiful red flower, was named for the enemy of all individuals who name the name of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.So, the name didn’t give me a good feeling.
Thousands of years ago, before men were created, angels were created by God in heaven. The angel, Lucifer was the most beautiful of all the angels at that time. The name means light according to Webster’s dictionary. Lucifer’s only job was to reflect the glory of God to others. But he wanted the glory. His selfishness and pride got him kicked out of heaven.
Fast forward a few years and my husband ad sons haul topsoil into our front yard and clear a nice spot in the front of our house to have a good size flower bed, complete with several bushes as well as flowers.My friend Missy came by and gave me the flowers I so admired from her yard: irises, black-eyed Susan’s, purple cone flowers, yellow sundrops and threw in some called obedience plants that are similar to snapdragons. I set to work planting them and later my husband had mulch brought in. It took until the following spring until we saw the flowers blooom. Things were going well in the flower bed.. Until it happened. I noticed the strange stems amongst the irises. If you didn’t look close you would not have noticed.Among the irises were a few stems that could have passed for the irises but were actually Lucifer’s! A mistake is a mistake.And I wasn’t going to complain to someone thoughtful enough to share their own things with me.
Come to find out these weren’t the last that bloom but close.The Lucifers grew on me and I loved them. So bright, beautiful red and so tall! The downside was they came to take over my flower bed by invasion. I grew tired of them multiplying and was done with them. Getting rid of them was no small task. Their bulbs multiplied like rabbits! Last fall I began the task of uprooting them. If I dug up 3 bags I didn’t dig any. As a matter of fact, I have since dug up at least two more bags of Lucifer bulbs.
Just when I think I am done another stalk appears out of nowhere.
I liken this flower story to the weeds in our lives I mentioned before. By mistake I received a few bulbs from one flowe, and when all was said and done I had had enough of that flower! If we think we are above problems, hangups,or issues, we are mistaken.What we do with those”weeds”or how we get rid of them is what really matters. Are we willing to pull things out by the roots or let them take over our lives by invasion? Why not try sowing in that same garden some kindness, patience, truth and hard work to combat and eventually” pullout” all the roots?
Yes, our flowerbeds and gardens can easily be overrun by uninvited guests. Fortunately, the latest invader, planted by birds, has a leaf and stem that is good to eat like spinach.
On the other hand, a parallel invader in life include two kinds: unwanted telephone calls and emails. Getting harder and harder to remove, totally.
