I've seen it first hand. As if conditioned, I learned to turn off my emotions as not to feel the pain...everything around me became almost robotic ~ mechanical!
Today, I do not smoke and the fog that was once in front of me has cleared.
Picture this ~> YOU!
Lying in a hospital bed. Nurses and doctors are surrounding you trying desperately to save your life.
You can't move because you are exhausted ~ gasping for air. You are drowning in your own bodily fluids. You frantically reach out for help...a little air ~ an IV is inserted, a large mask is placed over your nose and mouth.
Panic sets in....thoughts of smothering...
Tears of fear are streaming down your face...mentally you are screaming!
HELP ME SOMEONE! PLEASE DON"T LET ME DIE!
A needle is being inserted into your wrist (arterial blood gases) as you try without success to sit up to catch your breath.
The nurses are trying to hold you back in order to facilitate lifesaving treatment...you continue to fight for your life...
You're weakening. Your exhausted body sinks deeper into the bed.
Your eyes are heavy now...panic thrives in your body but you succumb to the inevitable.
Death is now a welcomed friend. You are too tired to fight anymore.
You're drifting in and out of consciousness.
Fade to black! You're DEAD!
NURSE CHARTS:
Patient expired . 0200hrs as per Dr. X
Family notified!
Final Diagnosis: Respiratory Arrest (CHF)
End of story?
NO! After witnessing this scenario night after night, this nurse went on break and lit up.
WHY?
I had a very stressful night because one of my patients died from a smoke related disease. I was seeking a release of sorts.
IRONIC or STUPID?
For all those having difficulty maintaining their quit, please don't smoke! I don't want to have to prepare your lifeless body so that your family can view you for the last time!
C H I L L I N G is not even the WORD! You've penned a life saving, heartbreaking write..............as a smoker, this one hit hard. I'm trying to quit, but it's not easy..............any suggestions you could provide would help GREATLY.
Wow! I applaud you for writing this...And I applaud you for your decision to quit smoking, thankfully that is something I never took up
God Bless
Michelle!
