An uneducated roustabout works the carny Ferris wheel. He's in love with the carny's beautiful secretary. He knows a terrible secret--there are shadow men in this world. One has been living in the carny and murdering young women. Our man decides to prove shadow men exist--with terrible consequences.
This was quite good. One of the better stories I've read on Authorsden. Most of the attempts here are amateurish, but not "The Shadow Man." Not only does it tell a good tale--it's well constructed and flows well. First rate characterization set in an interesting locale (travelling carnival). This would have made a great "X-Files" episode.
The fortunate inherit riches, prestige, positive notoriety. Those not so lucky bear legacies filled with poverty, infamy or, worse yet, the unhinged insanity and murderous urges of their ancestors.
