Dr. Rhine smiles uncomfortably. He doesn’t like what he does. He doesn’t even keep the money. If he was in it for that reason, he’d never need to remain a doctor at all. It’s his conscience that drives him. Others would call his actions inhuman if they knew, but he can’t worry about that. He constantly reminds himself of the consequences should he quit. It is not an option. “Yes. A disease,” he says. “I’m sorry.” He peers at the man’s chart. “I’m sorry David. There is no medical cure for the disease that you’ve been infected with. It is a growing problem in our area, and we strive daily to find a solution to the problem, but as of yet, we haven’t had any luck.”
“Am I going to die?” David asks.
The doctor frowns. If the man had a mirror and could see himself, he’d almost definitely realize the seriousness of his condition. His flesh is a sickening bluish white tone. Quickly the doctor retrieves a needle from his lab coat. It’s filled with Tetrodoxine, the most powerful poison known to man. It won’t kill David, not permanently. It will render him comatose, and seemingly dead to those that aren’t aware of the chemical in his system. In a few days, he will come back to life, almost miraculously.
“You’re already dead,” the doctor says grimly, as he leans over the bed.
