Each year about this time a special event takes place in Hattiesburg that could rival the Running of The Bulls in Spain. Many have prepared themselves for months just to survive
Some refer to it as the Mating Season others call it The Coming out Party. The athletes tend to refer to it as Put Up or Shut Up time. Those in high places are forced, by administrators, to call it Fall Registration. You could buy a good used car for what they charge to attend this party. I know because I have a freshman living somewhere over there. He calls home when he’s hungry, out of clean clothes or his car needs gas.
I was present this past Wednesday and witnessed what looked like an Organized Chinese Fire drill at a Lenny Kravitz Concert.
My freshman met me at Barnes & Noble to buy text books. We found them and I realized I should have applied for an equity loan on my home. It’s funny, but I remember buying books on the same campus for a whole lot less. That was when they were called the Southerners and a man named Pie Van ran the show.
The Hub is no longer the cafeteria. The Commons has taken its place but they still serve mystery meat on Fridays. Next door to the Hub was Weathersby Hall the smallest dorm on campus and my home away from home in the 1950s. We could step out the front door and be in the cafeteria in seconds which proved to be a tremendous asset for some. Today I saw two vacant lots. Weathersby Hall and the ROTC building have been demolished. Large heavy equipment was preparing the ground for yet another addition to USM. I can’t help but wonder if the powers that decided to demolish Weathersby Hall can somehow find a replacement for the memories and tradition that once lived there. I doubt it. I was suddenly back in 1959. I heard voices making plans for Saturday’s football game against Trinity and the dance that would follow at Wimpy’s.
