A bit of some random story I started writing yesterday. I have a good idea where its going, but once again I was bored as o often.... wrote one word and then the next, and now I have this. Enjoy
It was an unexplainably calm feeling that came over him as he stared out into the abyss. They said that early space explorers would often go mad from the solitude. This was something that Mathius had never understood. To him the immense void was the ultimate in security. Like the womb, it encompassed him, surrounded him in its infinite depths. He was shaken out of his thoughts as a subspace ripple ran harmonic through the hull of his small craft. Lights blinked and then every thing went back to normal. Ripples were just one of the unexplained and uncontrollable phenomenons that that still gave humanity cause for alarm in deep space. Mathius enjoyed the feeling of being at the mercy of the universe, knowing that some thing bigger and far more powerful than he, had the ultimate say in his tiny existence. Other men might find this concept disturbing, or even overwhelming, but Mathius was different than most people to say the least.

“Mining base to COD 1, do you copy?” The com crackled to life. He stayed silent for a moment waiting for the change in the operator’s voice on the other end.
“Mining base to COD 1, do you copy? COD 1, this is Mining base Coffin prime, we are tracking your hyper trail entering the belt. You must change heading immediately your ship can’t handle another pounding out there. Do you copy?” He waited a second than touched the com interface. “Mining base this is Cod 1 requesting permission to change heading. I appear to be entering the local belt.” The voice squawked in exasperation from the speaker. “Cod one we’ve been trying to contact you for some time now. Why haven’t you responded?” He waited, counting to 13 before the voice spoke again.
“Well COD 1 why haven’t responded?” He turned his head and spoke quietly.
“I’m sorry base_____you se___eem to be breaking up.” Another pause. My com must be on the fritz. I’m coming in now over and out.” He touched the com again powering it down and smiled. He loved messing with the uptight people in the Mining base. Many of them resented having someone as young as himself there in the first place. Some going so far as to say he was a risk and a liability. It was standard operating protocol to require an age of at least 25 for deep space operations. He had been the child prodigy, and son of a high ranking university magistrate. His father had gotten him this post at his request, and every one here knew it. Of course this really didn’t bother him, he just went about his duties excelling at any thing they ever asked of him, and generally showing no interest in any of the social activities provided on the station. Tapping in the command sequence for the return trip to dump his payload of precious ore, he sighed and leaned back starring again through the canopy at the glistening void. His thrusters kicked in and he felt the gentle tug on his neck as he accelerated. Dimming his console lights, he slid a tinny micro disk into the port on the bottom of his interface module. The same port he had installed himself with out any one really even noticing. A quiet hiss and then strains of music drifted over the speakers. Most music had been banned generations ago, for inciting “Free thought” among the general populace. You could never really extinguish any thing though. And for a price you can always get what you want. Just another benefit of being the son of a politician, no one asks questions.

It was only an hour or so later that his proximity alarm started it’s faint bleating to alert him of the space station he was approaching. He yawned and stretched briefly checking over the telemetry readouts that scrolled across the holo field to his right. Without much thought he switched on the com again to ask for docking sequence, but stopped when he heard traffic already on this channel. Unfamiliar voices speaking in a strange way. The cadence of there speech was off. Almost like some one who was speaking in code.
“We are on routine tour of this sector. Chambless sends his regards and requests you give us passage to nimbus caldega. Scramble all other headings.” None of this made any sense to him, but he waited to hear what the control tower operator’s response was. To his surprise it wasn’t her voice at all, but the voice of Prentice Hagarty, the aged yet amiable commander of there humble station.
