A MARVELOUS BEGINNING

Police Captain Batson and his twelve-year-old son, Billy, walked out the wide plate glass doors of the City National Bank to the busy street.
“It’s a runaway!” An old lady on the sidewalk watched a churning cement truck screaming down the long hill in front of the bank.
Cars lurched to a halt. Pedestrians scattered from crosswalks. Two armed men leaped from a parked car in the alley next to the bank.
“When the truck hits—rush the door.” The leader drew his weapon.
“I’m gonna drop that cop,” his partner said.
Shots from his machine gun cut into Billy’s father.
“Dad! Dad!” Billy dove to his bleeding father’s side.
The truck zoomed closer. The two crooks charged them.
Billy’s eyes darted in both directions. He jumped up. Faced the onslaught. Remembering the war cry from his Boy Scout troop, his mouth opened. “SHAZAM!”
Billy exploded to manhood in red tights and cape. His arms and legs burst out with muscles. A yellow lightning streak blazed across his mighty chest. He whirled and met the charging truck head-on, thrusting it into the air like a small toy. The two bandits stopped, gawked at him, then ran for their car. The red-suited knight leaped after them, grabbed the bumper with one hand, and flipped the sedan upside down.
Police cars, sirens blaring, converged from all directions. A noisy crowd closed in. The officers cordoned off the crime scene and cuffed the bad guys.
“Give Captain Batson air,” the sergeant said.
In the confusion, the hero slipped into the alley. Shortly, little Billy Batson ran to his father, lying on a stretcher.
“I’m okay,” his father said.
Billy gave him a big hug and kiss.
“Who was that gorgeous man in the cape?” a young woman asked a policeman. “He was marvelous.”
Billy turned, smiled, then whispered to his father. “From now on—it’s Captain Marvel.”
I'm trying to remember the comic book. Capt. Marvel was so long ago. But I'm getting sick of comic book superheroes in movies. So many contrived situations designed for the freak show that those weird heroes are.
On the other hand, I am addicted to The Walking Dead, even though they don't exist and the story has now gone from dead vs humans to the inevitable, humans vs humans. Let's make war.
