My father was dying. I knew it before the healer made his summation. His once strapping body was frail and colorless, as if he were already well on his way to ghosthood. My mother sat by the bed, life suddenly defined by silent tears and unheard prayers. I felt helpless as I watched all that had been my life slowly slip away to dust.
