I sit in darkness, listening to the sounds of the beasts as they prowl. Some scratch at my makeshift door, the dull sound of wood being abused letting me know that those claws are waiting, waiting for me to make a mistake. It’s time; I can put it off no longer. I must go among them.
My hair is wet, sticking to my forehead from sweat but, I am alive. The tedious morning ritual that I must perform is complete, my sanity saved, for yet another day.
The beast are lounging all around me, their long, pink tongues slowly lapping off the morsels of food still stuck to their fur. I feel eyes upon me and cannot help but think that they clean a bit too slow, perhaps taking pleasure in showing me the fangs that await me should I fail in my morning tasks.
