A story from my new book "Alone In The Dark" about two kids in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Space the final frontier. Star trek shows us that there is more out there then anyone of us knows. There must be more life in this universe then just us. There has to be after all there is always...
SPACE FOR MORE
"Deep in the heart of space no one can hear you scream! Because there is no air."
"Funny Charley! Really funny!" Jane stepped out into the night glancing up at the stars. The sky was so clear here. She was so excited she couldn't believe what she was about to do.
"Hey Jane are we going to do this or what?" Charley came up behind her carrying a duffle bag.
Jane looked at her brother and then over at the abandoned observatory. She had her doubts if the equipment still works.
"What the hell!" She walked over toward the front entrance.
"Alright sis! Let's do this." Charley raced ahead reaching the door first. The Observatory had been closed for many years now and was covered with graffiti.
He pulled a crowbar out of his bag and put it inside the padlock on the door. He pried the lock off with little effort. "Open sesame!" He proclaimed as he wedged the door open. The stale air invaded his senses. "MMM the smell of death in the air. After you."
"Funny! Smart ass. if you don't get serious I'm leaving."
He hands her a flashlight from his bag. "Fine let's go see some stars then."
They proceeded to enter the building. It was old and decaying from the inside as well as the outside. The tables and chairs were broken and the floor was covered with trash. They waded through the trash and cobwebs to the inner chamber were the telescope was kept.
"There it is sis. I told you it was still here." Charley walked over to it, pulled out some glass cleaner, and began to clean the lens.
Jane picked up some of the old papers and began reading them. "Look at this Charley it says here they discovered a new cluster of planets just outside our solar system. On the other side of Pluto." She shook her head. "That doesn't make sense."
Suddenly the lab came to life and Jane almost jumped out of her skin as the telescope started to move into position and the computers came online.
"How about that this stuff is still hooked up to the main. That's freaky!" Charley motioned Jane to the main viewer that he had cleaned. "Well you wanted to see the stars up close. Now's your chance."
"But?"
"No buts. Go ahead that is why we came here." He pushed her toward the viewer. "See your stars."
Jane smiled as she went over to the viewer and worked it like a pro going from one heavenly body to another. "They are so beautiful."
Charley admired her as he watched her. He had never seen her so happy. He was glad he talked her into it.
Without warning Jane jumped back from the viewer. "Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god!"
"What is it Jane? Are you alright?"
Charley caught her as she fell backwards
as she stared at the viewer with glossy eyes.
"They're coming!"
"Who's coming, Jane?"
Jane did not speak again but just stared at the viewer. Charley set her down in one of the old desk chairs. He stared into her once deep blue eyes which were now blood red.
"Talk to me Jane who's coming."
Suddenly the whole place shook violently as if the mountain they were in was angry and was about to hurl and spit them out.
"To late they're here!"
"Oh shit!" Charley picked up Jane in a fireman's carry. He ran as fast as his feet could carry him. He kicked the entrance open and leap out Jane still on his back.
He looked around in horror as all around him ships from another world were landing. He was trapped. There was nowhere to run.
Assuming they are intelligent beings, let's hope they are coming in peace! You seem to jump genres here from uncovering old mysteries to suddenly discovering a science fiction fantasy.
I found it humorous how you considered Star Trek the ultimate definer of other worlds with so many of them having 1G gravity, atmosphere and the right composition to breathe and other convenient, humanlike proclivities.
