Autumn Leaves
Fall is here and this marks my favorite time of the year. Fall is so seducing especially to me. This starts up what I call the prelude to THE HOLIDAYS. I’m talking about Thanksgiving, and Christmas with Halloween and the annual fall fairs to sort of kick things off.
The cooler temperatures are here to remind of such a joyous time of year and just in time after such a long, hot summer. I love breathing the cool fresh air early in the morning and late at night.
The leaves are not showing much change yet but this beautiful site is just around the corner. And yes as a friend of mine told me some years back, it is like watching God’s paint brush at work as he paints those beautiful colors of red, yellow, and gold.
So those autumn leaves will be so exhilarating to watch in probably 3 or 4 weeks. And then one day not so soon after that, on a cold, windy day I will gaze out my window as the Autumn Leaves start to fall.
I love that Johnny Mercer song. It grips my heart regardless of what time of year I hear it, but it is oh so special in autumn. Listening to those beautiful words creates such a longing in the heart..
Those brief words by Savannah Georgia’s own Johnny Mercer talks of a lost love. I wish I could have asked him if this song was about someone special or just a mood writing without anyone particular.
The song doesn’t tell you if it was just a lost love or a lover that actually died. It leaves ( no pun intended) that to the imagination.
I guess either way, it has to leave one with pain. At least though, if it was just a love lost because things didn’t work out, you would know they are still existing on this earth. I would tend to think that if it were a death, well that could be a different kind of grief that might must haunt you until the day you die.
Regardless, this is a song though so short says so much. Many, many people have recorded it and I have never heard a version that I disliked. If the singer can convey the sadness of it in his or her voice, well then they’ve really hit it. I do like it by Sinatra.
But I do remember Gene Pitney did a great job with it.
So if this song so aptly depicts the season and love itself and I believe it does, then let’s examine those words but before we do bring out the leather jackets, blue jeans, flannel shirts and that cup of coffee. Now we're ready.
The Falling Leaves
Drift by the window
The autumn leaves
Of red and gold
I see your lips
The summer kisses
The sunburned hands
I used to hold
Since you went away
The days grow long
And soon I'll hear
Old winter's song
But i miss you most of all
My darling
When autumn leaves
Start to fall
Thank you!
Love,
Susan
