As parents we spend so much time and energy preparing our children to be successful in school. In my case, I was able to coach my children quite well. They learned early on to appreciate doing well in academics. Never in my wildest dream did I think I would experience major depression after my eldest left to go attend college in Wyoming. What is wrong with me? I should be happy that my son is going on to further his education. Needless to say, I had a very difficult time adjusting. My dear poor child, I called him so many times it must have driven him crazy.
Last fall my husband and I drove our second child to california to attend Pepperdine University. The depression really hit me hard this time around, now I had two children attending school out of state. I had many sleepless nights. I rarely went out. I simply went to work came home , ate and went to bed. It was not until October, after visiting her during parent week-end that I began to be myself again. My husband and I had a heart to heart talk and decided to do something about this depression.
My husband brought a brand new 2009 Harley Davidson. He joined the local chapter of Harley Owner's Group . Of course, I was not too keen on him buying a motocycle because of the safety issue. Nevertheless, he was determined since his two older brothers own a Harley. He wanted to be able to go riding with them. This past week-end he went on a special tribute ride to honor a Black Buffalo soldier.
As for me, I decided to start writing again. Last year I did very little writing because I was busy helping my daughter with college applications and taking her to visit the colleges that she applied to.
Depression be gone! I have managed to publish my first children's picture book . I wrote the script for the book back in 2004. I am so very proud of my book because it is designed to help expose children to different cultures and languages. More importantly, I am fulfilling a long time dream of mine. I am totally dedicated to portraying children of color in a positive light in all of my books. It is so very important for all children to be portrayed in a positive light. Additionally, major steps must be taken in order to promote the importance of exposing young children to different cultures and languages. Our world is becoming more and more global, one must not remain complacent. I remember the major uproar that was made when President Obama made the comment about learning how to speak French. Guess what ! He was right. America must not sit around and let the rest of the world pass us by.
So my friend, if you find yourself going through some depression, please, please search deep and wide to find something you are passionate about, and start doing or working on it. May God Bless You abundantly like he has me.
