If you ask me, I think New Year's Resolutions are FICTION by most Americans, because I think most Americans, who make promises to themselves...don't keep them, etc. Somewhere along the line, they lose interest and inspiration, and they give up. The percentage of people who keep a New Years Resolution is probably pretty low.

When I first came online, and got my writing site here at Authors Den, I could not make a pledge or a promise to myself concerning traffic to my site, because all of us are new to the Internet, and we don't know what will happen.  But, to see numbers like this (traffic) are mind-boggling to me;

TRAFFIC; To Authors Den (writing site) From:  August, 2006 to the PRESENT;  456,097

For our friends and neighbors around the world, who may not know the meaning of the two words listed below, I will describe them for you;

bah...humbug; (definition);  an exclamation of discust or irritation;

From; WikiPedia.org;
A New Year's Resolution is a commitment that a person makes to one or more personal goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit.  A key element that sets it apart from the other resolutions, is that it is made in anticipation of the New Year.

BAH...HUMBUG; (My Two-Cents/opinion)
I think a person, should NOT have their new beginnings every year, but every day!   A person should wake up everyday...be grateful for their vision; and their motoring skills, and get up out of bed and start on their project.  I think the biggest obstacle to completing the project, is 'kicking the can down the road' (procrastination) and the individual gives up, etc.    The individual can keep a journal or mark a desk calendar, and check off your successful days at completing your project.
That can be inspirational in itself...

If every day is a new beginning...the individual can get inspired, and get started right away on the project, while he or she is still inspired.  When I lost the 40 pounds at the VA Medical Center (see story below), I stopped at Wal Mart, and bought a bathroom scale, and started right away to get the weight off.  It took me a year to lose the weight, and everyday I kept a journal, and I could hardly wait for the next day, to get on the scale again to see if there was any progress, etc.

Only 42% of Americans make a New Year's Resolution.  I can see why.  They probably 'kick the can down the road,' in the form of procrastination, and they never accomplish their goals.

Never again;  In 1961, I made a New Years Resolution...to NEVER  make another New Year's Resolution.  I made good on that promise to myself at a young age...and over the years, I've kept that promise!  Today (2012) I make a promise to myself throughout the year, when I think the promise is justified.  Following is a short list of the promises I made to myself over the years, and I've kept them all.

Quit smoking;
I quit smoking when I was 24 years old in 1970, and it's one of the best things I've ever done for myself; those around me, and for my pets, too.  It took me about a year to quit for good.  Since then, I have not touched any kind of tobacco products such as cigars; pipe or chew, which I think is the nastiest of the nasty.

Smoking Sucks!  How I Quit Smoking!

Lose 40 pounds;
I lost 40 pounds in 2001, and I knew I could do it, because I got the discipline from the time I quit smoking, and it took me about a year to lose the weight.  I think people in 2012, don't care about their health or their appearance...any old fat slob will do!

Here's The Skinny On How I Lost 40 Pounds;

It's one thing to lose weight; it's quite another, to keep it off...
For three years after I lost the weight, I was on a roller-coaster ride...up and down...170 pounds...up to 180 pounmds...back down to 170 pounds...back up to 180 pounds...so, how was I going to keep my weight down and not balloon back up over 200 pounds?  It took me about two years to figure out what to do to eliminate this roller coaster ride.

The answer?  Eliminate lunch!  Humans don't need to eat three meals a day, etc.  There are people surviving on seeds and a hand-full of leaves around the world.  Americans are just fat, spoiled brats, that don't need another meal in their lives.  So, I eliminated lunch, and months later I began to see a change.  No more roller coaster ride, and I started to see my weight stay closer to the 170 pound mark.

 Losing The Weight Is Only the Beginning...

Website;  In 2001, I was so anxious to get something called a website, and then I got one.  When I saw the clip-art library, I promised myself the website would be one of the best on the Internet, in the beginner's category.  I think I've done that, but the reader will be the judge.

Website name; (humordoctormd)

Jogging;
In 1986, I promised myself I would jog 15 miles a week for whatever time.  24 years later and 17,000 miles, I kept my promise.  In 2009, I quit jogging at the age of 64, primarily, to take care of my feet.  I bought a stationary bike, and I still do my exercise.  For all those excuse-makers out there...there is always a 1,000 different ways to exercise...that's if you want to.  I think most of the lazy bums out there...just don't want to.

Diabetes;
I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2008, and I knew this would be another challange in my life.  Diabetes is the #7 killer in the United States, and forget the New Year's Resolution...I had to find a way to keep from going blind; losing a limb; or even death.  One of my aunts died of diabetes at the young age of 53.  The finger-pricking journey started, as I pricked my finger hundreds of times, to gather data for me and my doctor.

In 2012, things look better, as my last three A1C are 5.9; 5.9 and 6.1.  I am pleased with the accomplishments for the last few years, but I have to stay with it, and keep an eye on this killer.

High Blood Pressure;
I've been fighting high blood pressure since I was 19 years of age in 2965.  It's been a 40 year battle for me.  Do you think there was a New Year's Resolution for every one of the 40 years?  That's ridicoulous!  I've been at this for this long because it could mean my life.  It's just common sense, too.

For as long as I can remember, I thought I would never live to the age of 55; then that came and went; then to the age of 60; and that came and went; and then to the age of 65; and that came and went; and now, at the age of 67, what's next?  For the last 15 years, I have a blood pressure kit at home, and I take my blood pressure twice a week.  I don't do it because it's a New Year's Resolution...I do it because it's common sense...I would like to live a little longer...

High Blood Pressure; The Silent Killer;

Prevention:
Do you think I rely on a New Year's Resolution to get a pjysical and blood tests every year?  That's just common sense to me.  I have to know what's going on inside my body so I can deal with it.  I would have never known I have diabetes, unless I get a blood test.  Do you think I want to go blind...because of neglect?

I suffered a stroke in 2012;
Because I monitor my blood pressure every week, doctor's told me that the blood pressure had nothing to do with it.  I was relieved about that.  Six months later, I don't think what caused it.  I think the paceMaker I've been carrying for six years had something to do with it, but they don't agree with me.

PaceMaker;
Did I make a New Year's Resolution at the beginning of 2012 to take out the pacemaker?  What would be the reason?  I talked to my cardiologist about removing the pacemaker because of my fear of blood contamination of plastic and metal.  The stroke didn't happem until May, 2012.  So, now I had two reasons to remove the pacemaker.  This has taken all year to get to this point.  Finally...the surgery and the pacemaker will be removed on January 8, 2013.  (about two more week of waiting at this writing).

Prescription drugs;
Prescription drugs is the #6 killer in the United States.  That's right, the drugs you and I take can kill us.  I've been hospitalized three time in the last three yeare, and all were due to prescription drugs.  Three years ago, I have gone on my mission to reduce the intake of prescription drugs in my life.  But, I didn't make a New Year's Resolution to do it.  It's just common sense to do it all year long.  I used to take ten pills a day and I cut that to three pills a day in 2012.

My prescription bill was cut, from about $122.00 a years two years ago; to $84.00 a years last years, and I know it will be less this year.  If everything goes alright with the removal of the pacemaker...the last three drugs will vanish as well...and at the age of 67, I won't be taking any pills at all.  HOORAY!  This was not done, becuase of a New Year's Resolution...it was done because of common sense...something that is in short supply in the United States.

Dirty humor;
The reader already knows that I don't make New Year's Resolutions, and so when I built my website, I know there would be NO dirty humor; or hate material; porn; or controversial topics; I kept my promise to myself for over ten years, and it didn't take a New Year's Resolution to do it.  I has just been to have something in good taste for people around the world to enjoy.  This had NOTHING to do with a New Year's Resolution.

Veteran;  I promised myself years ago, that I would get out of the VA Medical Center...and I did...I got my healthcare at the VA for over 18 years, so this thinking was for a long time.  I felt I would get murdered at the VA or WORSE...so, I had to get out.  When the pacemaker was implanted in 2006, I thought this was the day I would be murdered at the VA...lucky me...it didn't happen!  I got out of the VA in 2007, and I get me care in the private sector (Medicare).

Leaving the VA had nothing to do with a New Year's Resulolution...it had everything to do with my safety...and common sense....what's that?
