NEW YEAR, NEW MIND
By Uriah J. Fields
We all know a year consists of 365 days or 366 days in a leap year, according to the Gregorian calendar. We all probably know, to a greater or lesser degree, what the mind is. However, some people never mind the mind, or think about the mind. For them that is unfortunate. The mind is the part or faculty of a person that feels, perceives, thinks, remembers, desires and imagines. Even dreams are mind stuff as is the conscious and the unconscious.
A new mind, more correctly a "renewing mind," as opposed to a "renewed mind" or "static mind," is a mind that is in a state that can be called a "transfroming mind," ever expanding by the vicissitudes of life.
Since the beginning of a New Year is the time when some people make New Year's Resolutions, it seems that this is also an appropriate time for a person to resolve to make a leap of mind, henceforth have a new mind or renewing mind.
Since 1972 the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has as its motto the adopted maxim "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." Perhaps, the main way a person's mind is wasted is for him to live year after year without renewing his mind. The mind, like cells in the body which constantly change, needs to be renewing just as the song proclaims which says, "Morning by moring new mercies I see." Renewing the mind at least once a year can result in the acceleration of mind transformation. This may be the best way for a person to begin the New Year which is geared to calendar time.
An "attitude of gratitude" more than anything else enables a person to have a renewing mind or a new mind. "Faith" in oneself and the Creator is the next quality that is essential in acquiring a renewing mind or a new mind.
Any person has the potential to have a renewing mind or a new mind, i.e., to change the way he feels, perceives, thinks, remembers, desires and imagines, or even dreams. Wiseman Solomon offers us this wisdom, "As a person thinks, so is he." A human being, made in the image of the Creator, is too signifcant to waste his mind. "A mind is a terrible thing to waste."
New year, New Mind
No New Mind, No New Year
No New Mind, the Same-Old Same-Old.

I will try to keep your suggestion in mind as I move through the next year, making sure that I change my opinions and attitudes when the facts tell me that I should.
