A few thoughts on the 2 basic types of fantasy story

There are 2 basic types of fantasy stories: the ones where you begin inside the fantasy world (Middle Earth is the perfect example). In these types of stories, if there are humans, it is seldom explained why (Middle Earth is an exception to this to an extent).

The other type of story is the one where a human has to enter the fantasy world to have their adventure. The British seem to do best with these. We have the wardrobe, a rabbit hole, the Tardis, and a Hogwarts letter delivered by owl. In America we have a tornado to take you to Oz. Not too bad, but somehow it lacks the panache for me.

So... which type do you prefer and are there other examples of doorways into fantasy worlds that I am missing?

I enjoy all fantasy stories. I'm just a child at heart. I don't think I have even grown up yet. lol !!!!!

As a child, I certainly enjoyed the Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Gulliver's travels, and Alice in Wonderland. I realize that the last two were satires and that's why I tend to gravitate towards fantasies that are satires rather than fantasies that are merely fanciful or soap operas. It seems like once a classic fantasy is written, all the vultures sweep in and create endless spinoffs to the point where they become ridiculous in spite of garnering huge box office receipts.

I prefer either one if it is a good story. If it is a ripoff of a good story, I'll pass.
