ODD STAGINGS #8: The Civil War "Sound of Music"

"The Sound of Music" by Rodgers and Hammerstein,
set in pre-Civil War Georgia.

Maria is a member of an abolitionist group,
sent to the South as a nanny to spy.

Captain Von Trapp is a plantation owner,
but he is against his neighbors seeking to secede from the Union.

The Von Trapp family singers are a minstrel troupe
composed of freed slave children of the Captain.

When the war comes,
the state of Georgia wants to forcibly enlist the Captain
and re-enslave the children.

The Captain falls in love with Maria
and leads the children to safety
on the Underground Railroad to freedom in the North.

Instead of "Edelweiss"
the Captain sings "Dixie" as a mournful ballad.
