How I flipped off a quad.
Felonious Flip
First of all I must say that “felonious,” pertains to law, or the breaking of it, which goes to show you cannot believe everything you read. In this case I just like the way it sounds.
My recent “trip of the flip” back East consisted of a few interesting details that provide fodder for retelling. I suppose the most interesting item is my “demise in the skies,” so we will start with that.
The demise in the skies was actually on a mountaintop in Pennsylvania with our feet occasionally on solid ground, however if we were to walk horizontally for several hundred feet we would be high in the sky.
Mike and I had gone to see Woody and the fabulous home he had built far away from other things.
Woody had quads.
That should be enough for most of you who/whom know me, but for others who need details, I will give details.
Quads are motorcycles with 4 wheels, meant for off-roading, which was all that was available.
Woody was driving, I was behind him with nothing to lean back on. There were two handles to handle. After quite sometime of holding myself upright my muscles began to tire. Bouncing around on rocks, etc. did not help. I soon found myself unable to go much further than lying backwards, as though in a recliner, with no recliner.
I told Woody I could not go much further and he said we were heading home. That gave me a shot of adrenaline that proved worthless.
We arrived home and he parked the quad and hopped off. I attempted to do the same. I still could get no further than reclined. All of my muscles were tight. I tried to lift my right leg over the hump.
Suddenly, to my horror, I saw my legs going backwards over me. I was doing a flip. I let go of the handles and went off the back of the quad which was 3-4 feet above the ground. I thought I was dead.
Here’s the part I do not understand. I landed FLAT ON MY BACK, with my head under the quad, and my feet sticking out the back. I do not know how that is possible?
The only logical explanation is Dan Dan Dan! He saved me. My whole life flashed before my eyes and I almost bored myself to death. The only other possibility is I am indestructible. I think I’ll go with Danny.
I landed on my back in grass. Mike said an inch or two to my left were several rocks, which would have done me in.
I actually had no injuries except for a few cuts. My neck, back, shoulders, and groin, were stiff and aching, but I think that was because of them being pulled trying to get upright.
It took awhile but now all of that seems to be ok…There’s noting broken.
I don’t think I’ll do quads again.

I have bored many with my story of a fall backward from the top of the stepladder trying to paint a strip of trim, over-the-top of a laurel, landing on my back after about 12 feet in the air precisely on a downslope so that I did not receive any injury sliding and then back flipping over a two and a half foot high stone wall, landing on my feet with no video camera or anyone to see my miraculous escape from a sure broken neck. Clambered back up over that wall, up the slope to the stepladder, climbed back up to the top, and finished the job. Wasn't even sore the next day.
