That goal seems far off.

MEDIOCRITY

I try to instill on my students not to be satisfied with mediocracy, but they say they’ll worry about that unattainable goal if/when they attain it.

I told them I realized how they felt and agreed, in their case, that goal seems far off.

I noticed a cute young girl, sitting in the front row, having problems with her mucous membranes, “Excuse me My Dear, Why are you sobbing?”

“I so much want to achieve mediocrity, and now you tell me it is unattainable. It is as though my whole world has collapsed around me. What am I to do?”

I somehow felt responsible for her delusionary misconception, and offered this response in the hope of soothing her…

“I believe you may be thinking of Meritocracy, an elite group of people whose progress is based on ability and talent rather than on class, privilege, or wealth.”

She smiled.

“Unfortunately that goal is unattainable here as well…it’s not called ‘Class’ for nothing.”

I felt I had spent enough time with her and resumed lecturing the rest of my students. I told them that although they see mediocracy as an unattainable goal, I do not.

“The human psychic has been attaining unattainable goals throughout our history starting with finding a suitable vehicle after someone invented the wheel?

You have potential. I am quite sure that if all of you, ( and you know who you are,) put your best foot forward, and strive for better things, mediocrity will not be unattainable, but unavoidable.”

The cute girl smiled!

That made my day.
