As we come to the beginning of yet another year, I've come to the conclusion that life is a sacrifice. My parents sacrificed their sanity. My friends sacrificed their reputations. My family? Well, they wear veils in public most of the time. No, they aren't Muslim. They're just ashamed.
My parents always told my brothers and I that we should be thankful for their sacrifices and I truly am. Besides the immense amount of time and money spent on toys, food, education and self-medication, they also sacrificed a fair number of chickens, a goat, three winos and at least one unsuspecting tourist.
I can only come to one conclusion. It ain't easy being me. Once again, I apologize to poets everywhere.
People will say that I am strange
Or worse, they'll say I'm weird.
But they don't see the things I see
Or hear the things I hear.
They'll look at me and then they'll frown
Or laugh at what they see.
I tell you folks, you ought to know,
It ain't easy being me.
Oh yes, I'm weird and running scared
From things that shouldn't be.
Like taxes in Texas and strange kinds of sexes
And dogs that growl fiercely.
Folks out for my guns, clocks that don't run
And snakes hiding in trees.
I tell you true , 'tween me and you
It ain't easy being me.
There's politicians in Austin
Strange fellas in Boston
People that fight
And fish that don't bite.
Polecats that pole
Lies that are told.
Snakes in the grass
And coming in last.
Old wore out boots
And guns that won't shoot.
Congressional decrees
And big-mouthed celebrities.
Lyin' bureaucrats
And big old rats.
Feel down on my luck
But, I worry too much.
Oh yes, there's weird and then there's weird
It's all in perspective, you see.
Bills to be paid and eggs that ain't laid.
It ain't easy being me.
