Cynth'ya Lewis Reed married into a family whose decendants have recently been traced back to the early 1800s, with the actual family "birthplace" still standing, and located in Abbeville SC. This event will be the focus of the Abbeville County Historical Society and the State of South Carolina the weekend of July 9, 2004.
A black American family has traced its roots and surviving white post-slave owner decendents, to Abbeville South Carolina. This weekend in Atlanta GA, nearly 1,000 ancestors of a great-great grandfather, Bill Reid, who was born in 1846 first owned by the late Dr. William H. Barr of Abbeville, SC.
(Are we perhaps related to Roseanne Barr? That in itself would be more hisoric than Roseanne singing the Star Spangled Banner.)
The family will gather at the birthplace of their family's beginnings in America to the late 18th century. Anyone connected with this tour and experience can be assured that it is one that the city of Abbeville, and state of South Carolina will never forget.
The Reed/Puryear amily will be the focus of local, state, regional and quite possibly national attention this week in Altanta GA July 9-11, 2004. The Historical Society of Abbeville has brought together city, county and state dignitaries including the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission to welcome the family in an 11:00 a.m. ceremony called "The Gathering" at the Abbeville County Courthouse, downtown Abbeville. In fact, three current black college presidents will be present at the reunion who come from this family lineage.
