EXCERPT:  We Don't Exist

After reading the opinion article in the linked above, and then reading the article highlighted below by author/political columnist, sister Molly Ivins, there are some questions I have after reviewing the tenets of the Declaration of Independence, using the words "Declaration" and Independence:

Defined in Dictionary.com as follows

I. Declaration:  (noun) 1: a statement that is emphatic and explicit (spoken or written) 2: (law) unsworn statement that can be admitted in evidence in a legal transaction; "his declaration of innocence" 3: a statement of taxable goods or of dutiable properties 4: (contract bridge) the highest bid becomes the contract setting the number of tricks that the bidder must make [syn: contract] 5: a formal public statement; "the government made an announcement about changes in the drug war"; "a declaration of independence" [syn: announcement, proclamation, annunciation] 6: a formal expression by a meeting; agreed to by a vote [syn: resolution, resolve.]

II. Independence: (noun) 1: freedom from control or influence of another or others [syn: independency] 2: the successful ending of the American Revolution; "they maintained close relations with England even after independence" 3: a city in western Missouri; the beginning of the Santa Fe Trail [syn: Independence]

Now, I propose the following questions:

1. Were the pioneering spirits of the greatest nation on earth declared unpatriotic against the King of England for questioning his regime's values?

2. Were people imprisoned and chastised for expressing a passion for the right to speak out against without the human errors of those who were in power before the American Revolution?

3. Was the media of that day crucified for wanting to share the truth with those who were brave enough to pen it by pointing out the errors of those who were in power before and during the American Revolution?

4. For anyone who answers "yes" to the three previous questions, then ask yourself these: Why do we have a national precedence in power who arrests women who uphold the rights of confidentiality; why do we have a leader who pledges to be concerned about family but will not even offer a glass of water to Cindy Sheehan when she is concerned about her child's welfare in a war that she feels is not founded; and why is it that religion is used as the main steering engine of the adminstration as the mantra for the country, when religion in government was the very thing that drove us apart from England in the first place 230 years ago--and people of color were still regarded as less than cattle?

Happy Thanksgiving. . . celebrate the truth, question the spin.
