To captivate an audience you need to get over the biggest obstacle of all - you!

You know the phrase, "Get over yourself!"? People say it all the time, and more often than not, it's not meant as a piece of helpful advice. Well, I've changed it up a little: I often use the phrase "You need to Get Over YOU to Get INTO Others." This is the best way I know to tell you that in order to reach others, you must first get out of your own way. You must take the focus off yourself and stop worrying about what others think and refocus upon the audience. If you can do this you will be captivating.

For most of my adult life, I was an awful people-pleaser. I always felt like I had to earn the love of other people, and this behavior was starting to put a serious crimp in my ability to move forward in life. It was as if I was wearing a great big sign around my neck that read, "Please love me." It took violent crime, a brush with death, and three years of being blind (I was legally blind) before I could was able to reach the place where I could take the sign off myself and place it upon the mirror, where it belonged.

Good message that is needed in this world. I was very shy growing up, because I could only see other people's strengths but not their struggles, while I could see all my own flaws and few of my strengths. I figured everyone else could see my flaws, until the Lord pointed out to me one day in high school, that I had some wrong thinking. He enabled me to do things, such as standing before crowds and teaching and speaking, that I never would have done apart from Him. It is so true though, we are our biggest obstacle. May the Lord use your abilities and understanding to help many people struggling with this, to be enabled. Great message Chanti.

I was very shy and self-conscious when attempting public speaking even though I had a good sense of personal worth. It was just the idea of getting up in front of a lot of people that bothered me. Something that ran in the family because my sister and my niece both had Agoura phobia that prevented them from even functioning for a while.

I found in my case after taking speech classes in college that all I needed was a prop. Generally, a few notes to get me started on whatever I was speaking about and then once I got started the fear I had of not being understood went away.
