The other day I was driving down the road listening to the music of my youth. I had the volume turned up and I was getting down. My body was swaying from side to side; I was lip syncing, and having a blast jamming to the music of the 80’s.

At first I didn’t notice it, and I’m not sure how long he was even there. But as sure as I was that I was listening to music from the 80’s, I was just as sure that he was right there smack in the middle of my rear view mirror. The image was a little too close for my comfort, but obviously not for him.

A teenage boy who was in a big hurry, and who was apparently displeased with me driving somewhere close to the speed limit, was tailgating me- and leaning on his horn, hogging up the center position off my rear-view mirror.

I don't know how long he was there. I don't think I immediately heard his horn above the volume of my 80’s music. But eventually his impatience caught my attention as it blasted its way through Bon Jovi’s, Living on a Prayer.

I have to admit, I was a little annoyed with this teen boy. I even thought of giving him a brake job by slamming on my brakes and scaring the heck out of him. But as I continued to glare at this impatient, and what I believed to be rude teenage boy interrupting me and Jon Bon Jovi. I noticed through my rear view mirror that his car wasn’t empty.

As a matter of fact, he had several other kids in that car. It was a crowd of mixed teen boys and girls. The thought struck me that they were all someone’s children- and slamming on my brakes would be a really stupid thing for me to do.

I felt guilty for thinking about giving this teen boy a brake job- just because he was following me too closely and blasting his horn at me in his futile attempt to speed by me. I noticed in that moment of weakness that I had forgotten to remember the miracle that I truly was, and the miracle this boy truly was, especially to his parents. I’m thinking more deeply on this now, and I can now see the miracle that all of those teens in that car truly are, especially to their parents.

I believe that if the teen boy had thought to remember the miracle he truly is, and the miracle that his friends truly are, then I think he would have held himself up to a higher standard of behavior. I don’t think he would have acted like he did, and put himself and all of his passengers' safety in jeopardy. Doesn't he watch the news? Impatient, careless teens get into accidents and kill people!

I think back to a time when I remember my Granddaddy telling me that anytime someone is acting crazy or not living up to his or her full potential, it’s probably because they have forgotten to remember the miracle that they truly are.

Teens, take notice now, and bear in mind to remember the miracle that you truly are. Now go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us. Thanks in advance.
