"Lights On In The Window"
Selma resident Naomi Hoomalu will celebrate the release of her first fully
independent book at 7p.m. Friday in the Larry Stripling Performing Arts Center.
The book "Lights On In The Window" hit the shelves this week and can be found not only in Selma, but also in chain bookstores nationwide.
The book is a collection of short stories and poems that follow the path of a child growing into adulthood.
"The book is designed to force the reader to reminisce." said Hoomalu, known also as Naomi Johnson. "The purpose is for them to recall their past and think about their future.
Described by Hoomalu as "inspiational stories in the Southern tradition," the main theme of the book is the importance of lending a helping hand to others in need.
"Sometimes when you have a porblem, figuring out how to handle it not only helps youself, but it allows you to do something for other people in the same situation as well."
The reception is sponsored by the Ambassador's Playhouse. Ambassador's is
composed mainly of teen-agers and young children who create their own stage productions.
Hoomalu said the group has written an original skit based on the introduction
of her book and will be performing it at the party.
"There will also be two musicians there who wrote their own music and words to songs that will be used during the skit," Hoomalu said.
The author will be available to sign books after the performance. "The party is sort of in conjunction with my birthday, so there will be plenty of food ," Hoomalu said. "I'm just so thrilled that they did this for me."
Before the publishing of her book, Hoomalu had already made a name for herself in the literary world as an Iliad Press award winner and has been published several times in anthology collections.
She has also been recognized by the Library of Poets and the International Poets Society.
"Lights On In The Window" is published by Publish America and can be purchased through Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, Books-A-Milion and Wal-Mart.
