A poem or a prose piece is different to other kinds of writing also because of the inclusions and exclusions that it contains. A particular mind, one that has trained itself to perceive the world in a sensitive manner, is at work during the creative moment actively picking out some and leaving out other words, images, experiences to build a world from a certain point of view. The world thus created by the literary text is both like and different to the real world. The real world is too vast to fit into a literary text, yet the choices made by the poetic perception capture moments of the real world.  Words, images and experiences selected by the literary author are chosen to (a) provide pleasure to the reader and (b) help him see things from a different perspective. What the author chooses to show is as significant as what he chooses to leave out. The world is full of beautiful as well as ugly sights and sounds and the author chooses the ones that suit his purpose. Literature therefore can be said to contain what I would like to call “dense depiction” a term by which I imply selective projections meant to promote particular states of mind or moods.
