Did you know that no sentient being can endure the feeling of abandonment?

To begin this topic, let us never possess this foolhardy thought: "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God'" (Psalm 14: 1). In one of my morning strolls, I received a most precious possession. No, it wasn't material, but rather a celestial one. As I made my way up the street, I noticed the sunlight dazzling through the morning mist above the grass and in the tree branches. Now what has that to do with possessions? Well, with the change of seasons, my mood also changed, and with that came a realization that I should not neglect to be thankful for all the natural beauty God has created, not to mention that I should be observant. I made the beauty mine: no money, no stress, just enjoying what I already possess. This cannot be stolen or destroyed. It doesn't bring any anxiety or disappointment but a grasping for lovely things. Hear what God says: "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Matthew 6: 19-21 RSV).

Two possessions that we really need to have are a song in our heart to praise God and to be free from guilt. You can't get much higher than that! This is why we must seek forgiveness from anyone we may have offended. Even if that person refuses to acknowledge your sincere appeal, know that your guilt will be absolved. The Scriptures tell us so. How can this be? The conscience becomes clear: what a possession! Since our nature is not impeccable, we do well by our good intentions. Chances are, a person who refuses to acknowledge the intention has also hurt someone. Divine providence will consummate and even consecrate your conscience. This is by far one of the best possessions to own. You'll never hear that in a sociology book!

When we get a cell phone, calling card, or credit card, we must activate it before it becomes effective. So too, in order for us to gain some peace of mind in our life, we need to activate the proper source. How do we do that? We simply surrender our selfish wills to the Lord of glory. This brings us now to the topic of the pitfall of worldly possessions.

Did you know that no sentient being can endure the feeling of abandonment? In relationships, we are very capable of being possessive, are we not? I have seen ruined relationships due to someone trying to play God by being possessive of another human being. Human slavery is one example. It just doesn't work out. To possess pride with pomp will never get you any enjoyment or satisfaction whatsoever. Seek rather chastity and humility before God as possessions, and your reward will be great, not to mention unimaginable.

Beware of the dangers of covetousness. Your real satisfaction and sanctification in this life will never consist of many material possessions. Of course, we all need certain material things like food, clothing, shelter, and medical care (God provides), but the most important thing of all is to be loved and needed, and to give this same love.

To be contined
