Love is a force that pulls one to the other with the aim of donating oneself to the other. Friendship is the fruit of the bond of love, through which individuals form companionship for mutual support.

LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP IN THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY
WHAT IS LOVE?
The concept love cannot be fully exhausted, its meaning remains open to the intention and circumstance under which it is developed. Love is innate in human being and goes beyond the external features. It is the tendency of humanity to love since one is not created to live alone, humanity is gregarious and a being for the other according to Emmanuel Levinas the philosopher. In the process of love one discovers his or her weakness and develops a strong desire towards the other for the supplement of his or her insufficiency as a human being. Love in this sense becomes an internal force that draws one to the other in appreciation of the being of the other and the recognition of one’s incompleteness, which is completed in an affiliation with the other. It is always obvious that we cannot live without the influence of the other in our lives.
As the image of God, man is created for love. This truth was fully revealed to us in the New Testament, together with the mystery of the inner life of the Trinity: "God is love" (1 Jn 4:8) and in himself he lives a mystery of personal loving communion. Creating the human race in his own image...God inscribed in the humanity of man and woman the vocation, and thus the capacity and responsibility, of love and communion. Love is therefore the fundamental and innate vocation of every human being. Love could be stimulated by the physical features, psychological features, or the entire being of the other. These different conditions in which love is built gives rise to different types of love which will be looked into later in this write up.
THEOLOGICAL CONCEPT OF LOVE
Love is defined as the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake and our neighbors as ourselves for the love of God. Paul tells us that love is the greatest of the theological virtues. So faith, hope, love abide these three but the greatest of these is love (1 Cor 13:13). Love is the principle of unity in human community implanted by God to unite humanity in order to form a community in the spirit of self giving to one another. Because God calls human persons to divine-human familial communion, the first and greatest commandment is to love God and neighbor (see GS 24). Therefore, one's most basic Christian responsibility toward others is to love them.
Humanity is created in the image and likeness of God. It is obvious that the presence of the other reflects the image of the invisible God and therefore the glory of God is situated in every human being who reflects the image of invisible God. Love is therefore an appreciation of the divine nature of humanity and draws everyone to the other for a better appreciation of this divine which is commonly shared in the community of humanity.

Types of Love
1. Storge
This is fondness found among family members or people who have otherwise found themselves together by chance. It is described as the most natural, emotive and widely diffused love. It is natural in the sense that it is freely present without an external compulsion. No one compels one to love its brother or sister; one is inclined naturally to contribute to his or brother welfare without an external influence.
2. Philia
This is a love which exists between people who share common interest, with which they form companionship with the aim of sharing ideas together and enjoying each other companionship as a result of common interest shared.
3. Eros or Romantic love
This is a type of love influenced by a particular interest in life. This could be beauty, physical appearance or other factors; like one dominated by the desire for sex. It is love in the sense of falling in love because of some factors the other has which one is compelled to cherish. This type of love is often experienced in a friendship between a man and a woman. This type of love is incomplete in itself since some of those factors which influence love could change. Eros love focuses on particular factors of interest as a result of this it does not survive the challenges of changes which could take place humanity since change in itself is constant. The physical appearance of one loved could change because of accident or sickness, when this happens it affects this love.
4. Agape or Unconditional love
This a love which drives one into appreciating the entire being of the other person regardless of the circumstance, it is a love built on self donation without an intention of a reward from the other person. Agape is described as the divine love since it is a spontaneous drive towards the well being of the other person in the spirit of self donation for growth and development of the other without an intention of anything in return. This is found among Christians in imitation of our Lord Jesus Christ who gave himself to us for our liberation.

LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP
Friendship is the formation of companionship with the aim of sharing life challenges and aspirations in life in order to develop skills through mutual support in overcoming the predicaments of life. However, friendship is founded on the bond of love. It is love that draws two or more people together. Without love humanity remains incompatible, under the platform of incompatibility sharing of ideas or aspirations in life becomes impossible.
Friendship's starting point is that certain individuals who share a common interest attract and are attracted by each other, feel mutual sympathy and affection, and enjoy being together. They reveal themselves to each other by sharing their feelings and personal information, especially about their hopes and commitments, admire each other's good qualities, discover some significant agreement in values (and generally in basic convictions and commitments), are hopeful about each other's potential for communion and growth, and begin to give each other gifts and confer mutual benefits. Every friendship is built and nourished under love.
Friendship on the other hand is an adventurous life journey between two or more people with the aim of sharing their problems in life together in an atmosphere of mutual self giving and solidarity, through which they realize their goals and vision. In any friendship love is the sustaining principle and bond which exists between the friends. However, friendship is adventurous since two lovers who share their being together could turn to enemies in the process of betrayal from any of the friends; ideas shared together become a tool for mutual destruction.

CHRISTIAN FRIENDSHIP
In Christianity one is believed to be in a pilgrimage on earth to the eternal father who is the creator and sustainer of human life and whom all must return to after earthly sojourn. The journey to eternity is an adventurous journey which requires the solidarity among Christians. Friendship is important in Christianity since mutual support is required in this great journey to eternity. In friendship Christians share challenges in life support one another in realizing his or her goals in life. Humanity is endowed in different ways; friendship therefore provides an opportunity for humanity to offer themselves for the benefit of one another in utilizing their different individual God’s given gifts for the promotion of the well being of one another.

Friendship is intrinsically good and valuable for Christian life. Any friendship of the kind under consideration here is an instance of a basic human good, and so is good in itself. Friendship also is necessary for the full development and perfection of human persons, who are created for communion. Moreover, it facilitates the apostolate, for Christians have many opportunities to share their faith, like other things they value, with their friends, who, due to friendship, are disposed to be receptive. Finally, friendships are among the good fruits of human nature and effort destined to last forever (see GS 38-39). Therefore, while children and others subject to authority cannot be commanded to form friendships, parents and other authorities should do what they can to encourage and support authentic friendships

TYPES OF FRIENDSHIP
1. The Same sex friendship
Friendship could exist between a boy and a boy or between a girl and a girl. In either of these friendships the being of each is appreciated as means of mutual growth socially and psychologically. This type of friendship could develop as a result of a common interest shared or a desire of one friend to be influenced by the virtue found in one.
2. Opposite sex friendship
This is a friendship that exists between a boy and a girl. Men and women in nature could have different psychological and physical constitutions. In life situation they respond to situations of life in different ways. Why men are more logical and impatient in detail analysis, women are intuitive and more detail in analysis. The companionship of man and woman in friendship brings moderation to certain attitudes which could be found in either of the sex. It is natural for opposite sex to be attracted to each other. However in Christian relationship this attraction must be governed by the love of God who is believed to have his image in every human being.

However, in any Christian friendship one must always avoid projecting the instinct which could lead to erotic relationship and destroys the purpose of Christian friendship. Every friendship must be governed by the love God. The being of the other must be appreciated and all effort must be directed towards the development of the other positively. When friendship falls short of the fear of God it must be terminated because its aim is defeated. Friendship must be characterized by the desire for the promotion of the dignity of each other.

LIMITATION IN CHRISTIAN FRIENDSHIP
One should avoid confusing friendship with romantic relationship. Like the inclination that leads to friendship, erotic inclination, which leads to romance, is universal. However, while everyone may and should seek and offer friendship, only spouses should nurture a romantic relationship. Yet even in those who are neither married nor free to marry, inclinations toward friendship and romance often are commingled and easily confused, with the bad results that possible friendships are mistakenly treated as occasions of sin, actual friendships are spoiled by becoming occasions of sin, couples in love fail to cultivate friendship, and romantic relationships are wrongly nurtured as pseudo-friendships. In friendship therefore one must observe the limitations which abide in friendship, friends are therefore encouraged to promote self dignity of each other and avoid immoral relationship that could taint their personalities.

CONCLUSION
Love is the force that binds two individuals together in offering themselves for the growth and development of each other, friendship on the other hand is the companionship established for the purpose of mutual support, sharing ideas together with the aim of overcoming challenges with team spirit. Love is therefore the principle under which friendship is nourished and sustained. In every Christian friendship one must allow the love God to be the governing principle this enables a friend to protect the dignity of his or her friend with the recognition of the fact that everyone shares in the image of God. The image of God seen in a friend becomes a motivating factor to protect the interest and dignity of a friend with the consciousness that we are in an adventurous pilgrimage to eternity.
