THE PROSTATE
A powerhouse gland with a huge impact on a man’s Quality of Life.
As part of the male reproductive system, the prostate gland is about the size of a walnut; located in front of the rectum, between the bladder (just below) and the penis.
Main Functions of the Prostate:
1) produces the fluid that mixes with sperm to form semen—essential for male fertility via sperm transport; it is the male “G-spot”—stimulation of which produces a strong sexual response and intense orgasm
2) prostate muscles (sphincters) ensure the forceful pressure of semen into the urethra, to expel outward during ejaculation
3) prostate filters and removes toxins for protection of sperm—enhancing the chance of impregnation and ensuring optimum sperm quality
4) prostate erection nerves are responsible for the male erection via triggering the penis to swell and harden. These nerves, if damaged, create erectile difficulties/dysfunction (ED)
5) the prostate controls the flow of urine—prevents urine from leaving the bladder when not urinating; prevents urine from damaging ejaculate during orgasm (a sort of valve system)
6) PSA (prostate specific antigen) in the fluid, counteracts the clotting enzyme in the seminal fluid which essentially “glues” semen to a woman’s cervix. PSA dissolves this glue so sperm can travel to the uterus and impregnate an egg
7) prostate gland contains the crucial enzyme 5-alpha-reductase which converts, in the body, to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which is at least 10-times more powerful than simple testosterone. DHT is responsible for male sex drive (libido) and function.
