Settlers could never make American Indians Slaves! This is the reason for the Trail of Tears.
Why do we have the Trail of Tears? Colonizers could not make the American Indians Slaves. They would rather die first. Minnesota's White Liberal politicians and White Big Brother Big Siter Teachers are undoubtedly the worst politicians in the history of the State of Minnesota.
I saw a statement, but no article. I am having a little trouble equating Minnesota's liberal politicians with the forcing of the native population into narrow reservations where they would starve to death without the government dole. And, Jan is right about what the Portuguese and Spaniards did to indigenous people.
What's missing in history is the genocide… Outright slaughter of probably millions in order to "clear the land for "whatever kind of plunder the profit oriented "explorers." were seeking.
Interesting observation. Many, probably most, Africans felt the same - uprooting and displacing them no doubt helped with survivors' disorientation/re-education as slaves. The intersection of the Trail of Tears and the Great Southern Slave Route (Virginia to Louisiana) lies in southern Tennessee. The question of slavery always revolves around wealth, just as today's debt-slavery does. By the way, Spaniards and Portuguese did make slaves of American natives - killed them off by the millions in doing so. Info is probably not pertinent to Minnesota history, but is to New World 'settler' lore.
