A Turning Away!
Jack Kerouac turned away from the August pillars of Catholicism in his home town of Lowell, Massachusetts and listened and followed the beat of new minorities in America. His wanderings across America produced an American Zen Bible. He researched lost Asia authors art forms like the Haiku 5/ 7/5 form and wrote American styled Haikus. “On the Road” has an open free style with invented DASH punctuation. What was the punctuation style of ancient religious texts like the Biblical texts written in Hebrew and Aramaic? Jack Kerouac came up with a new scrolled text with original punctuation. He broke cannon by listening to great jazz musicians like Theolonius monk and then writing his scroll.
He wrote his essays in a jazz rhythms. He also took different images found in nature and made Impressum images. Then, built themes around these images to create a new language, an American idiom.
Biographia Literaria
James ODougherty, my father, was an Irish Catholic French Canadian literature major and teacher out St John’s Universitty, The English writer who fascinated him was Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He would quote his poems frequently at our Table Talk breakfasts in our family homes at 3317 West 44th Street and 5015 Gladstone Ave. What he loved about Samuel Taylor Coleridge was his critical interpretations approach which he translated into poems and sermons. Coleridge is a good critical measure for Jack Kerouac. His canon and rimes and leaves are hard canons played against the Jazz inspired texts of “On the Road” and “Dharma Bums.”
